Images of Aberdeen and South Dakota

ABERDEEN, South Dakota is a place of blue sky, clean air and wide open spaces. The city began in the late nineteenth century when the railroads were built through Dakota Territory, and it grew into a strong agricultural center that has now diversified into manufacturing and service. With a population of about 25,000, Aberdeen is the third largest city in the state. It combines the traditional Midwestern hospitality with the progressiveness of a metropolitan area to create a safe and friendly environment which fosters the pursuit of education.

Opportunity

The Aberdeen community has many things to offer NSU students, and is currently focused on attracting new and expanding industry to the area.

NSU is working to strengthen our partnership with local employers in order to offer students the opportunity for employment while they attend classes.  In some cases, benefit packages offered by local companies include tuition reimbursement. Job Location Service is provided by Financial Aid, in cooperation with the on-campus One-Stop Career Center representative, to help students find part-time employment off campus. Students may also find employment right on campus. For more information, contact the Financial Aid Office.

Opportunities for students in Aberdeen extend far beyond the classroom as well.  Some of the best hunting and fishing in the entire country can be found in the Aberdeen area.  The community boasts a thriving fine arts community highlighted by the historic Capitol Theater located in downtown Aberdeen.  Tee it up at one of our three golf courses, head to the stock car races, take in the major concerts at the Brown County Fair in the summertime, enjoy one of our beautiful bicycle trails or spend a fall day taking in the colors or riding the go-karts at Wylie Park.  You can even take a walk along the yellow brick road at Story Book Land!

If indoor activities are more your style, the spacious Lakewood Mall has many options for the local shopper.  Check out the 40 + stores the mall has to offer or catch a movie in the Carmike Cinemas.  In recent years many new businesses have opened throughout the city, and one of Aberdeen’s most recent projects involves the construction of a new Wal-Mart Super Center slated to begin in the fall of 2005.  There’s a lot happening in Aberdeen!
