WebAdvisor Instructions Academics

Access WebAdvisor
WebAdvisor
This program allows you to register for classes on line. It does not serve as an academic advisor. You must meet with your advisor and plan the classes you need prior to registering. You are responsible for taking the courses needed for your program and for meeting general education and core requirements.

Access and Logging In
Access WebAdvisor via the link above. Select "Log In" from the menu in the heading and type in your NSU student ID number with a prefix of n in lower case (example: n1234567). Then type in your WebAdvisor PIN number, sent to you by email. (You should change your PIN# for security reasons by choosing "Change password" from the Personal Profile menu. Your PIN# must be 6 numbers long. Avoid repetetive number combinations, such as 999999.)

If you experience problems accessing the program, please contact Enrollment Services at 605-626-2012 during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays).

Do not use the back button in your browser to navigate WebAdvisor. Instead, select the Menu button at the top or the bottom of the screen.

Searching for Classes
This option allows you to search the schedule of course offerings for upcoming terms. Please keep your searches narrow if you want to avoid slowing the system. This option is particularly useful if you are limited to certain times that you are available for class. Please note that any classes with a non-numeric section are reserved for Learning Community students. If you are not a freshman planning to take an entire Learning Community block of classes, DO NOT SELECT ONE OF THESE COURSES.

Registering for Classes
You can register for Spring 2002 classes using the "Register for classes" transaction. It is best if you have determined what classes you need first and use the Express registration option. For this option, you will need to know either the synonym number or the exact subject, course number and section number of each course. Make sure to enter the term for each course. If a class has a required co-requisite, you will need to enter this course information as well. If you miss listing co-requisites, you will get an error message after you submit your registration. Select "Register for classes" and try again.

If you use the search and register option, you will automatically be registered in any class that has a required co-requisite section. If there is a choice of sections, you will be able to make a selection.

Note that this registration is real and directly affects your student record. If you register for a class, you will be charged for it. Note also the following points:

  • Repeating a Class: This system will not allow you to register for a class you have already taken. If you need to repeat a class to earn a higher grade, you will need to register for it at Records/Registration, DH 101.
  • Prerequisites: This system will not allow you to register for classes for which you have not met pre-requisites. If your registration fails for this reason and you feel it is an error, see Records/Registration, DH 101.
  • Special Permission: You will not be able to use WebAdvisor to add any classes that require permission of the instructor (such course adds will need to be done via the regular paper processes).
  • Holds: If you have holds on your record, the system will stop you from registering for classes. You will need to clear any hold(s) before you will be allowed to register or make changes to your registration.
Adding and Dropping Classes
After registering, you can add or drop a class using "Add Classes" or Drop Classes" transactions until the week prior to the start of classes. You should discuss the impact of any such changes on your program with your academic advisor. Some courses are offered infrequently, and not taking them when they are available may delay your graduation.

Note that these transactions are real and directly affect your student record. If you add a class, you will be charged for it. Changes in your registration may affect your financial aid. If you drop a class, it will be dropped from your record and your seat in it will be released to other students.

Viewing and Printing the Schedule
To view the schedule after you have completed your registration, select "My class schedule"; you can print the schedule if your computer is connected to a printer.
