After taking their lumps in game one, Northern State came close again but was unable to upend University of Minnesota-Morris Friday at Aberdeen's Fossum Field. NSU (4-22 overall) lost 15-5 and 7-6 in a nine-inning thriller.
Tied at five going into the sixth inning, NSU's offense was unable put any more runs across. Senior pitcher Jake Foslien (Benson, Minn.) did his part, scattering 10 hits and giving up four earned runs. The Cougars finally broke through in the top of the ninth with two unearned runs. The Wolves answered in the bottom of the inning with one run and had the bases loaded with one out before UMM closed the door.
Sophomore second baseman Jimmy May (Ortonville, Minn.) had a stellar day for NSU. Aside from making a few highlight-reel defensive plays in the infield, May also went 4-for-7 from the plate (.571 average), including one RBI, a double and a triple. He also drew two walks.
