FRESHMAN
FISBECK CLUTCH IN WOLVES' SWEEP
OF MINNESOTA-MORRIS
April
5, 2002

O-Town
connection - NSU's Owen Olson connects
on a pitch during the first game of Northern's doubleheader
with Minnesota-Morris Friday. |
Freshman
first baseman Wesley Fisbeck (Loveland, Colo.) pelted a game-winning
single up the middle of the field to give Northern State a
4-3 victory over Minnesota-Morris Friday in the nightcap of
a doubleheader at NSU's Fossum Field.
Fisbeck's
shot with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning scored
senior all-conference performer Eric Borge (Mellette) to end
the game.
Northern
led for most of the first game and held on for an 8-7 win.
Fisbeck's insurance run in the bottom of the sixth in that
contest proved to be a game-winner too, as Morris charged
back with three runs in the seventh to make the game close.
Sophomore
hurler Shawn Young (St. Paul, Minn.) picked up the win in
the first game, while the versatile Borge notched his first
save on the year. Freshman pitcher Joe Dinger (Aberdeen) earned
his first collegiate win in the second game. Fisbeck was 3-for-8
with 2 RBI for the day.
Even though
both Northern and Morris are members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference, the game did not count as a league contest. Due
to the number of teams in the NSIC and the shorter number
of weekends in Upper Midwest for the conference baseball season,
the league decided to adopt a scheduling system in which every
school wouldn't play each other each year. NSU and UMM weren't
scheduled to play a conference game this season. The teams
decided to pick up a non-conference doubleheader due to proximity.
Northern
faces off against Wayne State (Neb.) in conference doubleheaders
Saturday and Sunday.
