April 9, 2002

Eckart scatters five - Sophomore pitcher Jeff Eckart lets fly on a pitch during NSU's doubleheader with Trinity Bible Tuesday. Eckart scattered five hits and picked up the win in the second game.

After dropping four straight last weekend, Northern State got back in the win column Tuesday by posting 10-2 and 15-0 (4 innings) wins over Trinity Bible College Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader at Fossum Field in Aberdeen.

In the first game, senior utility player Eric Borge (Mellette) picked up the win on the mound after allowing two hits in six innings. Sophomore pitcher Jeff Eckart (St. Helens, Ore.) picked up the win in game two, scattering five hits in four innnings of work.

In the second game, NSU was able to use the 15-run rule in the bottom of the fourth when freshman catcher Ben Cupp (Rapid City) blasted a two-run homerun with one out to end the game.

He got the Juice -- Jeff Joosten returns to the dugout after blasting a 417-foot home run Tuesday.

Cupp's game-ending homer was outdone only by teammate Jeff Joosten's game-beginning blast. The sophomore outfielder from Lakeville, Minn., blasted a 417-foot shot in the first inning to score NSU's first two runs and get the team rolling. Joosten was 5-for-7 on the day with three RBI and four runs scored.

Northern (7-18) resumes Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Thursday, hosting Southwest State (Marshall, Minn.). The doubleheader, originally scheduled for Wednesday, was moved back a day and will begin at 1:30 p.m.
