WIN TWO IN MISSOURI

Joplin, MO
- The Northern State University baseball team finished play in the
Missouri Southern Invitational with a 2-6 record gaining wins over
Morningside and Wisconsin-Superior in their season-opening tournament.
Following are

NSU gave up
11 runs on 11 hits in its season-opening loss to Missouri Western
on March 13. Shortstop Joel Backous and catcher Steve
Rixen led the Wolves at the plate each going 2-for-3. Rixen
scored the Wolves lone run in the fifth inning on an RBI by freshman
Joe Fuller. Jay Duehring received the loss for NSU
going all seven innings and striking out six.

The Wolves
collected just two hits and gave up 11 to Missouri Southern in their
6-1 loss on Thursday. NSU's Dave Holoch and Joel Backous
put together back to back hits in the fourth inning to score the
lone run for Northern State. Joe Dinger gave up four earned
runs in six innings of work on the hill for NSU. He struck out three
in the game.

Northern State
was edged by Morningside 5-4 on Friday in day two of the Missouri
Southern Invitational. The Wolves were ahead 3-0 before the Mustangs
put up two runs in the bottom of the second, another in the third
and two more in the fourth inning. Sophomore centerfielder Deacon
Burns recorded a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored, two stolen
bases and a solo home run.

Missouri Western
put up 27 runs in their shutout over the Wolves on Friday. NSU gave
up 14 hits in the game but committed 10 errors to contribute to
the rout. Steve Rixen and Deacon Burns earned NSU's
only two hits of the ballgame.

Northern State
earned its first win of the season in a 2-1 victory over Morningside
on Saturday. The Wolves came back from a 1-0 deficit in the third
to score two in the fourth and hold on for the win. The Wolves posted
just three hits in the game but were helped out by five Mustang
errors. Wesley Fisbeck was 1-for-3 on the day with a run
scored while freshman pitcher Joe Fuller threw a complete
game five hitter to earn the first victory of his career.

used 11 hits to secure a 7-3 vicotory over the Wolves on Saturday
in Joplin, MO. NSU jumped out 2-0 but the Defenders answered with
seven unanswered runs to earn the win. NSU's Deacon Burns
and Joe Fuller each posted two-hit games while pitcher Wesley
Fisbeck allowed five earned runs in six innings of work.

NSU fell to
Missouri Western for the third time on the weekend with its 10-3
setback on Sunday in Joplin, MO. Northern gave up five runs in the
second and five in the sixth to give MWSC the advantage. Dave
Holoch went 2-for-3 on the game with an RBI while Joel Backous
was 1-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

NSU won its
second game of the Missouri Southern Invitational on Sunday with
an 8-2 victory over Wisconsin-Superior. The Wolves scored two in
the first followed by three-run innings in the fourth and the sixth
to earn the six-run win. Six Wolves collected hits in the game led
by Deacon Burns who hit 2-for-3 with three runs scored, three
RBIs and a home run.
