JOPLIN, Mo. - Northern State's baseball team continued its spring trip Wednesday with a doubleheader loss to William Penn University of Iowa.

The Wolves lost by scores of 4-3 and 15-9.

William Penn scored a pair of seventh-inning runs to win the first game, which the Wolves led early. Northern scratched out single runs in the third and fourth innings before William Penn scored twice in its half of the fourth to knot the game at two. Northern added a single run in the fifth inning and kept the lead until William Penn's seventh-inning rally.

Northern assistant coach Alex Ferguson said the Wolves played well but struggled a little in the pitching department.

"It was a little frustrating. We walked too many people, but defensively we played well," Ferguson said. "Andrew (Corre) pitched well for us but ran out of gas and walked a few guys."

Seth Taylor and Mike Murdy had the Northern State hits, a double by Taylor and a single by Murdy. Wes Fisbeck drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Ferguson said the Wolves were flat to begin the second game and William Penn jumped out to a huge lead. The Wolves trailed 8-1 before scoring five times in the fifth inning. The Wolves could get no closer and were outscored 7-3 the rest of the way.

"We didn't pitch particularly well that game," said Ferguson. "We had four walks and hit three batters. We came back and hit the ball hard, but our pitching didn't hold up."

The teams combined for 25 hits in the second game after totaling just four in the first game. Charlie Woida led the Wolves with three hits and Benji Kieffer had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs.

The Wolves (1-3) will face Grand Valley State today at 11 a.m. and William Penn at 2 p.m.
