Bashin' Joel Backous Homered in the Bottom of the 7th
Inning in Game 2 to Force Extra Innings

Aberdeen , S.D. -Northern State was swept by Wayne State 20-6 and 19-17 (8 innings) at Fossum Field. The Wolves had their changes in game two but six errors and ten unearned runs led to their undoing. On the day the two teams combined for 15 errors. The Wolves fall to 16-19 overall and 5-9 in the NSIC, while the Wildcats improve to 30-10 overall and 13-3 in the NSIC.

The Wolves lost a shoot out in game one 20-6 after the Wildcats amassed 23 hits. The Wolves scored the majority of their runs on long balls as Joel Backous, Adam Kampsen and Charlie Woida used dingers to put up four of the Wolves runs. Kampsen finished the day 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Joel Backous stuck out for only the sixth time this season in his first at bat, but racked up three hits in his next three at bats to finish the day 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Matt Reich dropped to 4-4 on the season as he went two innings giving up nine runs on ten hits. Jarod Olson came in relief in the third was went 4 1/3 innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits. Tony Thomas came in for the final two out of the game and gave up four unearned runs on four hits.

Game two was a back and forth battle in which neither team looked sharp. The Wolves took an early 10-4 lead after two innings but gave up four runs in the third to lead by two. The Wolves added three in the fourth only to have Wayne counter with six in the fifth to lead 14-13. Wayne added a run in the sixth, but the Wolves countered this time with three in bottom half of the innings to lead 16-15. Wayne scored two in the top of the seventh to take a one run lead. Joel Backous’ solo homer in the bottom of the seventh forced extra innings. Wayne scored two in the top of the eight to get the win.

In the game there was ten errors between the two teams. In the bottom of the sixth after an error allowed a runner on and Jeff Demarco singled, Benji Kieffer bunted down the third base line. A throwing errors by the third baseman scored Seth Taylor, then a throwing error on the right fielder scored both Demarco and Kieffer.

Both teams went threw five pitchers in the game. Wayne State used three pitchers in the first two innings. In the end Nilius got the win for Wayne and Matt Reich picked up his second loss of the day.

The same two teams meet tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
