Aberdeen, S.D. - Northern State split with one of the NSIC’s top teams as they defeated Concordia St. Paul 4-3 in game one, and fell short in a 8-10 loss in game two. Joel Backous had a stellar day as he went 5 for 8 on the day including his second triple in his career and the game winning RBI in game one on a suicide squeeze.. The Wolves are now 18-23 overall and 7-12 in the NSIC. The Wolves will not make the NSIC Tournament after Winona State swept Minnesota-Crookston today. Wayne State is 28-9 overall and 16-4 in the NSIC, a game behind Wayne State.

It took nine innings and a suicide squeeze, but Northern State knocked off Concordia St. Paul 4-3 in game one. Charlie Woida pitched a gem in his final pitching performance as a Wolf. The senior went nine innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits.

The Wolves started the bottom of the ninth with a bunt single by Benji Kieffer and then one by Woida. A throwing error on the pitcher advanced Kieffer to third. With Bashin’ Joel Backous at the plate, Coach Fredrickson called for the suicide squeeze. Kieffer took off and Backous took a high pitch and dropped it in front of the right side of the pitcher’s mound end the game.

Backous finished the game 3 for 4 with a triple, two run’s scored and a RBI.

Game two saw the Wolves take a pair of early leads, only to submit them to the Golden Bears. Concordia used a five run fifth inning to take a 9-7 lead. The Wolves would cut it to one in the sixth, but an insurance run in the top of the seventh gave them all the runs they needed. Valdie Magstadt, ignoring physics, hit his first home run of the season into a strong wind in the third inning.

The Wolves take on Concordia St. Paul again tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
