Wolves Rallies Fall Short

Wayne, Neb. – Northern State (7-34, 0-14 NSIC) had two late rallies fall short at #25 Wayne State (32-13-1, 19-1 NSIC) as the Wolves lost 8-10 and 3-4. The Wolves series with the Wildcats was cut to two games and pushed back a day due to rain.

Wayne State used eight runs in the first three innings on their way to a 10-8 win in game one. The Wolves rallied back for two runs in the fifth and six in the top of the seventh, but fell short of the upset.

After a pair of strike outs to start the top of the seventh the Wolves picked up six consecutive two-out hits, including two doubles and a homer run. Adam Kampsen and Mike Paulson both doubled while Christian Tavarez hit a two run homer (his third of the season). But the Wolves pinch hitter flew out to end the game.

Justin Downes (0-5) took the loss after going six innings, giving up ten runs on 14 hits while striking out three of the 34 batters he faced.

Four Wolves had two-hit games, including Kampsen, Aaron Kappes, Paul Gerrish and Tavarez.

The Wolves rallied late in game two as well, but again fell short in a 3-4 loss. Down 4-1 going into the seventh inning Tavarez homered for the second time on the day to bring the Wolves within one. Kampsen singled, but the rally ended there as the Wolves remain winless in NSIC.

Matt Reich (1-6) took the loss after going all six innings, giving up four runs on 11 hits. Reich got himself in trouble allowing runners on base early in the inning, but he did not allow more than one run in an inning.

Kampsen went 2-for-3 in the game two picking up his twelfth double of the season. Tavarez was 1-for-3 with his fourth homer and two RBI while Paul Gerrish went 2-for-4 while pounding his fifth double of the season.

The Wolves will host Presentation College in twinball action on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at Fossum Field in Aberdeen, S.D.

The Wolves will finish the season this Saturday and Sunday when they host Bemidji State in doubleheader action on each day.
