MITCHELL, S.D. - In the first ever meeting between Northern State (4-10) and Ashford University the Wolves took home a split. The Wolves won the first game of the double dip rather handely 7-2 and then in the second game errors cost the Wolves as they lost 3-5.
In the first game the Wolves got an outstanding pitching performance from senior Justin Downes as he picked up his second win on the year. Downes went the full seven innings giving up eight hits, two earned runs, while striking out nine batters. Offensively the Wolves Aaron Kappes went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI off of his first home run of the season. Tom Kieser had a huge three run triple in the top of the fifth inning to blow the game wide open. Justin Downs went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's.
Ashford was led by Kyle Mantick, Brian Cummings, and Tyler Sukut as they combined to go 6-for-9 in the game. Jake Handzus picked up the loss for Ashford as he went 5.0 innings giving up 8 hits, 7 earned runs, and striking out 7 batters.
In the second game the Wolves has a few costly errors that caused them to fall 3-5 to Ashford. The Wolves were down 1-0 and 3-1 but battled back to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning. But an error inthe sixth helped Ashford get two runs to secure the win.
The Wolves were led by Aaron Kappes as he went 2-for-4 wiht one run scored. Four other Wolves batters had one hit apiece. Ashford had four players that had one hit apiece but Kyle Mantick had 2 RBI's on their way to victoy.
Wolves freshman pitcher Tyler Fries got the lose to even his record at 1-1. Fries wehtn 4.0 innings giving up 2 hits, 1 earned run, while striking out 3 batters. Jimmy Driscoll got the win for Ashford as he went the complete seven innings giving up 6 hits, 3 earned runs, and struck out five batters.
The Wolves will open up conference action on March 24 and 25 when they take on the Winona State Warriors.
