CROOKSTON, Minn. - The Northern State football team posted a season high seven touchdowns in a 52-9 slaughter of the Golden Eagles of Minnesota, Crookston Saturday afternoon. The Wolves scored in each quarter and had 640 yards of offense while holding UMC to 185 total yards. The Wolves improve to 3-5 overall and 3-3 in the NSIC while UMC falls to 1-6 overall and 0-6 NSIC.
The Wolves notched 14 points in the first quarter and scored touchdowns in five of their first six possessions of the game. Northern gave up a safety to Minnesota, Crookston in the first quarter and punted twice in the game, but all other NSU possessions resulted in more and more points being tagged to their total.
Eric Ellingson connected with Brian Jark on the team's first two scoring plays, the first being a 37-yard touchdown pass and the second coming from 15 yards out. An Ellingson running play and a Kevin Sherman reception were the team's next two scores. In a trick play just before the end of the first half, Brian Jark completed a 22 yard touchdown pass to Mike Cahoy to put the Wolves up 35-2.
Michael Krigbaum and Trent DesLauriers caught Northern's fourth and fifth touchdowns of the game and Thomas Parrott connected on a 23-yard field goal to set the Wolves' overall scoring at 52 points. The only points for UMC came as a result of a safety and a third quarter 87-yard scoring drive capped by a 1-yard rush into the endzone.
Ellingson completed 26-of-34 passes for 393 yards and four touchdowns in the game. Jark caught nine passes for 163 yards and two TDs and was followed by Cahoy with 76 receiving yards and a touchdown. Andrew Wanner threw a touchdown pass and led the team in rushing yards with 58. Northern's 447 passing yards was a season high, as was their 193 rushing yards. Parrot was successful on the extra point attempt following each of NSU's seven touchdowns.
The Northern defense had one of their finest showings of the year, holding the Golden Eagles to just 185 yards of offense. They forced seven punts, two turnovers on loss of downs, and recovered two UMC fumbles. Travis Frogge led the squad with six tackles and was followed by Mike Preciado with five. Ikaika Delosantos had four tackles, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Dustin Swearingen had two sacks and four tackles. The Wolves' defense totaled six sacks in the game and had five pass breakups.
Northern returns to Swisher Field next weekend, hosting MSU Moorhead in a 2:30 pm meeting.
