Augie Capitalizes on Wolves Turnovers

Sioux Falls, S.D. – Augustana College turned four Northern State turnovers into 16 points in a 36-16 win at Howard Wood Field. The Wolves had early opportunities, but inopportune penalties (ten for 99 yards) and miscues led to their demise.

The Wolves defense started the game off on a high note as T. J. Johnson intercepted a pass out in the flats on the second play of the game. The Wolves took the ball twenty yards downto the Augie 17 yard line before the drive stalled and Clinton Arial-Ryan booted a 34 yard field goal to put the Wolves up 3-0 two minutes into the game.

After the Wolves found themselves down three, 13-10 at the half, misfortune struck in their opening drive when a batted ball was intercepted on the Wolves 25 yard line. Augie took two plays to capitalize and go up 19-10 (fake attempt failed).

The Wolves looked to battle back after Misi Finau intercepted a batted ball on the Augie 18. The Wolves had a first and goal from the five yard line, but were set back on a false start call. The Wolves managed to get back their five yards before being denied twice from the one yard line and turned the ball over on downs. If being denied the end zone wasn’t disheartening enough in its self, Augie countered with a 16 play, 99 yard drive that took over seven minutes off the clock. The drive was capped off by a two-yard run to put the Vikings up 26-10 with seconds left in the third.

The Wolves did however take their next possession 80 yards in 11 plays capped off with a two yard Toby Korrodi to Rudy Jones TD pass. The Wolves two point attempt failed as they pulled within ten at 26-10. Augie would add a field goal and touchdown late to seal the game.

The Wolves were out gained 457 to 348 in total offense and lost the time of possession battle 33:00 to 27:00. Wolves quarterback Toby Korrodi went 28 of 47 for 291 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked five times and picked off three times.

The leading receiver in the game was Josh Martin who hauled in six catches for 94 yards, including a 42 yarder that help spark the Wolves final score. Matt Pinto grabbed five balls for 70 yards including the Wolves first TD.

Misi Finau led the Wolves defense with six tackles (five solo), three pass break-ups and an interception. T.J. Johnson had the Wolves other take away to go with a pass break up and a pair of tackles. Sione Tupou led the team in tackles for loss with three and four total tackles.

The Wolves host Nebraska Kearney in their home opener next Saturday, September 18th at 3:00 p.m. at Swisher Field.
