Northern State stopped the Huskies on their opening drive after a Daniel Kaczor pass was incomplete on fourth and 15 from the Wolves 36. Keri Niumata got the pressure on Kaczor to stop the Huskies opening drive and give the Wolves the ball with decent field position for their opening possession. But the Wolves only managed on first down on the drive that covered only 14 yards on six plays and were forced to punt the ball back to the Huskies.
From there the Huskies mounted three scoring drives on their next four possessions opening up a 21-0 halftime led. The Wolves did have an opportunity to be the first team this season to score on the Huskies in the first half as Clinton Arial-Ryan attempted a 50 yard field goal as time expired in the first half, but the kick came up just short.
The third quarter saw the two teams exchange touchdowns, first the Huskies on a six yard Matt Birkel run. Birkel, the second leading rusher in division two coming into the game, finished with 116 yards on 16 carries and a pair of TDs. The Wolves answered the score with a 13 yard touchdown pass from John Russell to Wade Ginsbach with 3:35 left in the third.
The Huskies would add another touchdown and a field goal in the fourth quarter to end the scoring at 38-7 in favor of the thirteenth ranked Huskies.
Russell finished the game 18 of 35 for 150 yards and a touchdown. Johnny Bentley rushed 15 times for 60 yards, while Ginsbach hauled in six catches for 61 yards and a score.
Defensively the Wolves were led by Jackson Hegerfeld and Stephon Betts, who both had 11 tackles in the game. Hegerfeld had three solo stops and a tackle for a loss while Betts had a tackle for a loss and a fumble recovery.
The Wolves open up NSIC action next week as they travel to Moorhead to take on the winless Dragons of Minnesota State. MSU Moorhead lost 55-7 to Minnesota-Duluth.
