NSU Men Picked For Nationally Televised Game
December 5, 2006
ABERDEEN, SD - The Northern State men’s basketball team has been chosen as one of six NCAA Division II games that will be televised on a national level. The spotlights will shine in Wachs Arena as the Wolves take on defending national champion and conference foe Winona State on Saturday, January 27. The game time is set for 11:00 am and will be broadcast on CSTV.
The broadcast game is part of a partnership between NCAA Division II and CSTV: College Sports Television that will showcase more than 80 live Division II regular-season football and basketball games over a series of years. Northern was also part of this deal during football season, when the NSU/Concordia-St. Paul game was broadcast live on the internet.
“The CSTV partnership has been a great success story for Division II,” said Charles Ambrose, chair of the NCAA Division II Presidents Council and president at Pfeiffer University. “It has provided the NCAA with an opportunity to ensure that more of our fans can watch Division II games regardless of their location. We’ve also been pleased to have another outlet to demonstrate our strength as a division in connecting with the community, and providing our student-athletes with a high-level athletic experience while maintaining an important emphasis on the educational goals at hand.”
Both the Northern State men’s and women’s basketball schedules will be altered to adjust for this great opportunity. The games against Upper Iowa, originally scheduled for Friday, January 26 will be moved to Sunday, January 28. The women will tip-off at 1:00 pm with the men’s games to follow. The games scheduled for Saturday will remain, but with altered game times. As mentioned, the televised game has been moved to an 11:00 am start and the women’s game will follow at 1:00 pm.
The Wolves and Warriors met on the hardcourt four times last season, with Winona State taking each of the wins. The teams faced each other in both the NSIC Tournament Championship game and the North Central Region Championship game. In the only game played between the teams in Wachs Arena last season, a season high 6,721 fans packed into the stands. This is the fourth highest single-game attendance mark in Division II basketball. The Wolves fell to #1 Winona State this season in the NSIC opener, 90-62.
