Grand Forks, N.D. – The Fighting Sioux broke open a close game as they went on a 18-3 run the last five minutes of the game to upend Northern State 80-70 at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks. Northern State Head Coach Don Meyer remains at win number 798 in his career.
The game was close throughout with there being ten times and ten lead changes. The Sioux were able to open a 41-35 halftime lead thanks to a 8-3 run to close the half. The Wolves were done by as many as nine in the second half, and were able to close the margin, only to have the Sioux keep pulling away.
Aaron Busack (Jr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) scored a game high 19 points and grabbed five rebounds on the night. Matt Hammer (Jr., G/F, Elkton, S.D.) dropped in 14 on 6 of 9 shooting and had three steals. Dustin Hjelmeland (Sr., F, Staple, Minn.) was the last Wolf in double-figures as he went 4 of 6 from the field and 3 of 5 from long range.
The Wolves were pound on the glass as they were out rebounded 37 to 19, with the Sioux grabbing 11 offensive boards leading to 11 second chance points.
Both teams shot well from the floor; the Wolves were 50% shooting, as they hit 25-52 shots. The Sioux were 56.9 % as they connected on 29 of 51 shots. Three point edge went to the Wolves and they hit 7 of 16 (43.8%) of their shots from outside, while the Sioux only hit 18.8 % (3-16) of their three-pointers.
The Wolves return to Barnett Center on Saturday, December 4 th to host North Dakota State at 7:00 p.m. The Wolves defeated the Bison, 79-72 at the SMUS / US Bancorp Classic just last weekend.
