Aberdeen, SD. - Winona State ended Northern State’s 15 game NSIC home game winning streak as they downed the Wolves 88-76. Northern State falls to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the NSIC, while the Warriors improve to 12-8 overall and 3-2 in the NSIC. Winona State’s Jonte Flowers lead all scorers with 27 points. This marks the Wolves first NSIC loss at home since falling to Bemidji State 82-77 back on Jan. 18 , 2003.
The Wolves dropped their first game of the season after leading at the half. With the Wolves up 36-31, the Warriors opened up the second half on a 7-0 run to knot the game at 38 with 16:57 left to go. Six minutes later the Warriors went on another run, this time a 12-2 run opening up a 10 point lead with eight minutes to go. The Wolves were unable to chip away at the lead, as the Warriors were red hot from the field. The Warriors shot an astounding 59.3% (16-27) from the field in the second half as they outscored the Wolves 57-40 in the half.
Northern State shot well on the night as they finished 25 of 49 (51%) from the field. Matt Hammer (Jr., F, Elkton, S.D.) collected his fourth double-double as he finished the night with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Aaron Busack (Jr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) added 16 points and five rebounds, while Dustin Hjelmeland (Sr., F, Staples, Minn.) dropped 14 points including four three pointers.
The Wolves take on Concordia St. Paul tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. at Barnett Center. This game was pushed back a day due to poor weather conditions on Friday.
