Mustangs Drop Wolves in Marshall

MARSHALL, Minn. – Northern State dropped its third game in four contests as they fell at Southwest Minnesota State 94-88. The Wolves fall to 18-8 overall and 9-4 in the NSIC as they will finish in third place in the league and host a first round tournament game on Wednesday, March 2 nd at 8:00 p.m. at Barnett Center. The Mustangs improve to 11-17 overall and 5-8 in the NSIC.

The Wolves took an early lead and led by eight before the Mustangs went on a 15-0 run midway through the first half. SMSU’s Elijah Starzel scored nine straight points for the Mustangs in the run. The Wolves battled back to lead 44-42 at the half, and held the lead most of the second half until the 5:12 mark when the Mustangs took the lead for good. The Wolves had a chance to tie the game with 1:23 to go, but Matt Hammer (Jr., G/F, Elkton, S.D.) missed a free throw and the Mustangs went down to hit a three pointer to seal their fifth league win of the season.

The Mustangs had five players in double figures, while the Wolves had four. The Wolves were led by Jarod Obering (Sr., G, Beatrice, Neb.), who had this fifth game in a row with four or more three pointers as he finished the game with a season high five threes and 23 points. Hammer added 21 points while Aaron Busack (Jr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) put in 13 and Craig Nelson (R-Fr., G, Mayville, N.D.) added ten for the Wolves.

Northern State finishes the regular season tomorrow night at Wayne State at 8:00 p.m. The Wolves will host a first round playoff game on Wednesday, March 2 nd at 8:00 p.m. against Wayne State, SW Minnesota State or Concordia St. Paul.
