Top Seeded Metro State Ends Wolves Season at North Central Regional

DENVER - Northern State ran into a hot shooting Metro State team as they fell 83-60 in the first round of the NCAA DII North Central Regional. The Wolves finish the season 21-10 while Metro State improves to 27-3 and will host the winner of the (4) Minnesota State vs. (5) Fort Lewis game tomorrow afternoon.

Metro State, the host team and #2 team in the nation, shot 60% (30-50) from the field in the game while the Wolves connected on only 27.8% (15-54) of their shots in the game. Northern State is 3-6 in NCAA Regional games.

Metro State extends is home winning streak to 37 games. The Wolves tied a school record as they took 39 threes in the game, connecting on only nine (23.1%).

Northern State trialed by ten in the first half, 37-27, after a poor shooting performance. The Wolves hit only 6 of 21 (28.6%) shots from the field and 3 of 14 (21.4%) from three point ranges. The Wolves did hit 12 of 15 (80%) free throws. Metro hit 56% (14-25) of their shots from the field but only 1 of 4 from three-point range. The Wolves 27 points was their lowest first half total of the season.

Seniors Dustin Hjelmeland, Jarod Obering (Beatrice, Neb.) and Tony Birmingham (Moorhead, Minn.) all played in their final game for Northern State. Hjelmeland finished the game tying a season high with 18 points while Obering added ten of his own. Craig Nelson (R-Fr., G, Mayville, N.D.) was the other Wolf in double figures with 11. Matt Hammer (Jr., G/F, Elkton, S.D.), the Wolves scoring leader at 18.8 ppg, was held to just eight points on 1 of 9 shooting but did have seven assists.

The Wolves finish their season 21-10 overall and 9-5 in the NSIC. The Wolves finished the regular season in third place, but won their second consecutive NSIC Tournament Championship in as many years. Matt Hammer was named NSIC Player of the Year, NSIC Tournament MVP and North Central Regional First Team.
