Northern State Has Good Showing Against #10 Kentucky

Lexington, KY - Northern State had a good showing against #10 Kentucky in a 51-80 exhibition loss in front of 17,035 fans at Rupp Arena. After scoring only 15 first half points the Wolves tallied 36 in the second half, but 25 turnovers led to 34 Wildcats points.

Matt Hammer (Sr., F, Elkton, S.D.) led the Wolves with 16 points (14 in the second half) as he went 6 of 13 on the night. Bjoern Schoo (Sr., C, Germany) had a solid game as the seven-footer had six points, six boards, a blocked shot, a steal and an assist.

The Wolves did not get their first free throw of the game until the 12:57 mark of the second half. They finished the game hitting 4 of 5 from the line. The Wildcats did not impress from the line as they 8 of 16 for only 50%.

Kentucky finished the game hitting 51.5% (34-66) from the field, but only 23.5 % (4-17) from beyond the arc. The Wolves hit 36.2 % (21-58) from the field and only 22.7% (5-22) from downtown. The Wolves also had seven of their shots blocked in the game.

Kentucky had 8 steals in the game, while the Wolves had 7. The Wildcats also turned the ball over 16 times compared to the Wolves 25.

The Wolves trailed by 20 at the half, but kept it at 15 through most of the second half, until the Wildcats went on a 16-2 run starting at the 9:56 that cover over five minutes, opening their lead to 70-42.

The Wolves trailed the Wildcats 35-15 at the half after struggling the last ten minutes, scoring only five points the final 11:18 and turning the ball over 15 times. The Wildcats used the Wolves scoring draught and turnovers to go on a 20-7 the final twelve minutes of the first half.

Kyle Schwan (R-So., G, Aberdeen, S.D.) led the Wolves scoring in the first half as he had five points, including a three pointer with 2:03 left in the half. After Hammer hit his first shot of the game to make it 4-3 Wolves, he missed his next five shots including four three pointers.

The Wolves did out rebound the Wildcats most of the half, but ended up being out rebound 18-15 in the first and 40-31 in the game.

Northern State travels to Nashville, Tenn. to take on the University of Vanderbilt on Saturday, November 5 th at 4:00 p.m. CST in their second of three exhibition games.
