Wolves Get Past Hot Shooting DWU

Aberdeen, S.D. – Northern State (1-0) survived a scare from Dakota Wesleyan (3-4) as the Wolves held off a hot shooting Tiger team 84-76. Dakota Wesleyan was 12 of 17 (70.6%) from three point range including 10 of 11 (90.9%) in the second half.

Northern State held a ten point lead at the half, 35-25, but Dakota Wesleyan was able to chisel away at the Wolves lead and closed to within four a couple of times, but the Wolves were able to battle back to double digit leads.

The Tigers final run came with just under seven minutes to go when Kevin Talley hit one of his five three points to pull the game within four. Three turnovers on their next four possessions would end any upset thoughts for the Tigers. Talley finished with a game high 25 points on 9 of 13 shooting and 5 of 6 from downtown.

Northern State was led by red-shirt sophomore Craig Nelson (G, Mayville, N.D.), who had a career night. Nelson had career highs in scoring (19), field goals made (5), field goals attempted (9), three pointers made (5) and three pointers attempted (9). MattHammer (Sr., F, Elkton, S.D.) had 13 points, while DanDeWitt (So., G, Lino Lakes, Minn,) had a career high 12 points. LeviHamilton (So., F, Lincoln, Neb.) was the other Wolf in double figures with 10.

Both teams shot the ball well as the Wolves finished shooting 44.4% (28-63) from the field, while the Tiger hit 26 of 50 shots for 52%. The Wolves shot 31 three pointers in the game, hitting 13 for 41.9%, but the Tigers upped them one as they hit over 70% (12-17) from downtown. Both teams struggled from the line a bit as the Wolves hit 15 of 22 (68.2%) and the Tigers were 12 of 21 (57.1%) on the night.

The Wolves continue a long home stand to start the season as the host Mount Marty (4-0) Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at Barnett Center.
