Wolves Knock Mount Marty From Undefeated
Aberdeen, S.D. – Northern State (2-0) knocked Mount Marty (4-1) from the ranks of the undefeated as they joust the Lancers 87-65 at Barnett Center in Aberdeen.
The Wolves were led by red-shirt sophomore Kyle Schwan's (G, Aberdeen, S.D) 17 points and center Aaron Busack's ( Redwood Falls, Minn.) 14. Busack now ranks 21 st all-time in scoring at NSU with 1,229 points and needs just ten more points to surpass Kevin Buntrock (1977-81) for the 20 th spot all-time.
Northern State head coach Don Meyer picked up his 816 win as he coached in his 1097 collegiate game.
Northern State opened the game on a 9-1 run and never looked back as they led the entire way. The Wolves outscored the Lancers 51-11 in bench points, 16-0 in fast break points and 44-28 in points in the paint.
Dan DeWitt (So., G, Lino Lakes, Minn,) was 4 of 6 from the field for 11 points, while Bjoern Schoo (Sr., C, Germany) was 2 for 2 from the field and 6 for 6 from the charity stripe to finish with 10 points.
Matt Hammer (Sr., F, Elkton, S.D.) scored only eight points, but added five assists and five rebounds in his 31 minutes of play. Craig Nelson (R-So., G, Mayville, N.D.) played a well-rounded game also as he finished with nine points, five assists and four steals.
The Lancers were led by center Justin Bonnichsen, who scored a game high 21 points.
The Wolves shot 64.7% (33-51) from the field compared to 46.7% (21-45) by the Lancers. The Wolves owned the boards as they had 31 rebounds compared to only 18. Both teams turned the ball over more than they would have liked; 25 times for the Lances and 24 for the Wolves.
Northern State remains home to face Black Hills State on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at Barnett Center. Black Hills State is coached by former Wolves assistant Paul Sather. Former Wolves guard Steve Smiley is also on the BHSU staff.
