Wolves Run Past Minnesota State on Day Two of Super 8/Bob Wachs Classic 77-63

Aberdeen, S.D. – Northern State (6-0, 0-0 NSIC) used a 16-0 run midway through the first half to run away from Minnesota State (3-2, 0-0 NCC) 77-63 on day two of the Super 8 / Bob Wachs Classic. Northern State’s Aaron Busack (Sr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) picked up his fifth career double double as the led the team high in points (16) and rebounds (10). MSU’s Luke Anderson was nearly inexorable as he scored a career high 30 points on 11 of 16 shooting.

Northern State’s 6-0 start is the best since the 1996-97 season when they also started 6-0; prior to that the Wolves started 9-0 back in 1994-95.

Northern State trailed 21-23 with 10:06 left in the first half before they mounted a 16-0 run over the next five plus minutes. Four different Wolves scored during the run that held up until the half as the Wolves held a 48-33 lead.

Minnesota State tried to mount a comeback in the second half as they went on a 9-0 run near the nine minute mark, but foul trouble put Anderson on the bench and the Wolves recovered to go on and win 77-63.

Matt Hammer (Sr., F, Elkton, S.D.) was second on the team in scoring with 13 points while CraigNelson (R-So., G, Mayville, N.D.) had 12. Levi Hamilton (So., F, Lincoln, Neb.) finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

The all-time series between the two teams now stands at 9-4 in favor of the Mavericks.

Northern State plays their seven straight home game to open the season on Tuesday, November 29th when the University of North Dakota comes to town.

Undre Ellis Lifts SMSU to Victory over Future NSIC foe Upper Iowa


Senior guard Undre Ellis’ (St. Paul, Minn.) field goal with 26.4 seconds left snapped a 83-83 tie and lifted Southwest Minnesota State to a thrilling 87-83 victory over Upper Iowa on Saturday night in the Super 8 / Wachs Classic in Aberdeen, S.D.

The win was the first of the season for SMSU who now improves to 1-2 on the season.

The game-winning shot by Ellis capped his best game in his short time in a Mustang uniform. Ellis finished the game with 24 points on 9 of 12 shooting including a perfect 3 for 3 from 3-point range. He also added four rebounds, two assists and one steal in 37 minutes.
