Wolves Outlast Wildcats in Wayne, America
Wayne, Neb. - #21Northern State (11-1, 1-0 NSIC) opened up the NSIC season with a 78-64 win over Wayne State (2-7, 0-1 NSIC) at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Neb. After trailing by one at the break, the Wolves used a pair of runs in the second half to open up a close game.
With the game tied at 48 with 12:15 to go in the game the Wolves went on a 10-3 run to go up 58-51 with 9:46 to go. The Wolves continued to add to their lead as they went on an 8-0 run from the nine minute mark to the five minute mark to lead 66-53. The Wolves closed the game out from there.
Wayne State opened the game on a 12-4 run three and a half minutes into the game. The Wolves battled their way back to take the lead 22-21 with 7:43 left and stretched the lead to 28-21 with 5:32 to go. But the Wildcats took advantage of the three point shot and Wolves turnovers and went on a 14-6 run to end the first half with a 35-34 lead.
The Wildcats were 6 of 12 from three point range in the first half while the Wolves were 1 of 4. The Wolves were out rebounded 15-12 and 6 to 3 on the offensive end. The Wolves also struggled from the free throw line as they were only 9 of 14 (64.3%) while the Wildcats were 5 of 6 (83.3%). The Wolves turned the ball over seven times, compared to nine by the Wildcats in the first half.
The Wolves finished the game shooting 46% (25-54) while the Wildcats were 43% (21-49). The Wolves had a huge edge at the free throw line as they were 24-30 (80%) while the Wildcats were 9 of 17 (52.9%). The Wolves out rebounded the Wildcats 36-27 in the game and 16 to 11 on the offensive end which led to 18 second chance points for the Wolves.
The Wolves were led by Aaron Busack (Sr., C, Redwood Falls, Minn.) who scored 16 points on 7 of 14 shooting. MattHammer (Sr., F, Elkton, S.D.) had 15 points and eight rebounds while AdamGrant (Sr., F, Berthold, N.D.) and LeviHamilton (So., F, Lincoln, Neb.) both had ten. Craig Nelson (R-So., G, Mayville, N.D.) and Bjoern Schoo (Sr., C, Germany) added nine to the Wolves attack.
