Wolves Hold Off Vikings


Kevin Ratzsch led the Wolves to victory with a career high 32 points.

ABERDEEN, S.D.- Kevin Ratzsch helped the Wolves improve their record to 3-0 on the young season as they defeated the Augustana Vikings (1-1) 72-70, with Ratzsch scoring a career high 32 points. The Wolves were able to hit some big free throws down the stretch to hold off the Vikings.

In the first half, the Wolves got down by a score of 24-13 with 8:40 left in the first half, although they would battle back with a 17 to 6 run to end the half and tie the score up at 30 apiece. In the first half the Wolves were led by Kevin Ratzsch as he scored 12 points. The Vikings were led by Nick Olson as he went 3 of 4 from the three point line and poured in 11 points.

The Wolves only shot 32.1% (9/28) to the Vikings 47.8% (11/23) in the first 20 minutes. They were able to force 13 turnovers in the first half while only committing 9 of their own.

Northern fell behind early in the second half, going down 40-34, but as in the first half, they continued to battle and took the lead for good at 48-45 on a Kevin Ratzsch three pointer at the 9:25 mark. The Vikings would cut the lead to with in a basket a couple of times but the Wolves were able to hit clutch free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Kevin Ratzsch had a great night, scoring a career high 32 points off of 8-of-15 shooting. He also went 11-of-13 from the free throw line and 5-of-7 from the three point range. On the boards, the Wolves were led by Mitch Boeck as he snared seven rebounds with three of them being on the offensive end.

The Wolves were out rebounded by the Vikings 37 to 27 in the game but forced 20 turnovers to their 15.

The Vikings we led by Nick Olson led the Vikings as he scored 17 points. Joey Ryan had 13 points and snared 6 rebounds for the Vikings.

The Wolves will be in action next Tuesday on November 21st when they travel to Grand Forks, N.D. to take on the University of North Dakota at 8:00 pm.
