Wolves Lose Second Game in a Row


Hamilton's career high 23 points were not enough to lead the Wolves to victory Saturday night.

Aberdeen, S.D.- The Northern State Wolves lost their second game in a row at the Super 8/Bob Wachs Classic held in Aberdeen, S.D. as they went down to #15 Nebraska-Kearney 84-73. With the loss the Wolves fall to 4-2 on the year as the Lopers improve to 2-1 on the year.

The Wolves and the Lopers played the first ten minutes of the game trading baskets, but at the 8:32 mark of the first half the Lopers went on a 23-11 run to take a 14 point lead into halftime at 47-33.

The Wolves' defense struggled once again as they allowed the Lopers to shoot 61.3% (19-of-31) in the first half and 45.5% (5-of-11) from behind the arc. Meanwhile, the Wolves only shot 42.3% (11-of-26) from the field and 44.4% (4-of-9) from long distance.

In the first half the Wolves were led by Levi Hamilton as he had 9 points off of 4-of-6 shooting. Kevin Ratszch and Luke Wicks had 8 and 7 points, respectively. The Lopers were led by Dusty Jura as he scored 14 points off of 6-of-8 shooting. In the half the Wolves had 9 turnovers to the Lopers' 8 and were out-rebounded 18 to 10.

In the second half Northern State got down by as many as 20 points, but they were able to battle back with some tough defense and the inside presence of Hamilton. The Wolves pulled to within in six points a couple of times in the second half, but would run out of gas at the end. The Lopers hit some key free throws down the stretch to seal the 84-73 win.

For the game the Wolves were led by Levi Hamilton who scored a career high of 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting. Also in double figures for the Wolves was Kevin Ratszch with 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting and Luke Wicks as he scored 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting.

The Lopers were led by Dusty Jura as he had a double double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Chad Burger added 20 points for the Lopers and Drake Beranek scored 15 points.

The Lopers out-rebounded the Wolves by ten in the game, 35 to 25, and only committed 13 turnovers to the Wolves' 14. For the game, UNK shot 53.4% (31 of 58) from the field to NSU's 48.1% (26 of 54).

The Wolves will open up conference action next weekend when they travel to Winona, Minn. to take on the #1 team in the nation, the Winona State Warriors on Friday December 1 st at 8:00 pm. They will follow up with a Saturday matchup at Upper Iowa, also tipping-off at 8:00 pm.
