Wolves Move Into Tie For Third In NSIC Standings

February 24, 2007
BISMARCK, ND - A 77-59 win over the University of Mary (9-18, 5-13 NSIC) on Saturday night moves the Northern State Wolves (20-7, 13-5 NSIC) into a tie with Concordia-St. Paul for third place in the NSIC. Following tiebreaker guidelines, the decision will go to an NCAA Power Formula and NSIC Tournament brackets will be released on Sunday. The Wolves will host a first round NSIC tournament game on Wednesday, February 28 at 8:00 pm.

The Wolves shot 55.8 percent from the field (24-43) and hit 18-of-21 free throws in their Saturday night win over the University of Mary. Northern held the Marauders to a dreary 19.2 percent shooting performance in the first half and took a 32-21 lead going into the intermission.

The good times kept on rolling for Northern State in the second half as they pushed their lead to 20 points by the 14:09 mark. The Wolves pounded the Marauders with hit after hit from the outside, as 12 of their first 16 second half points came from beyond the arc. U-Mary’s one strength in the game came on the rebounding front, as they ripped down 14 offensive boards to NSU’s 3, but of those gained scoring opportunities, the Marauders were able to score just 10 second chance points. The Wolves controlled the remainder of the game and walked away with the 77-59 win.

Northern received another outstanding offensive night from junior guard/forward Kevin Ratzsch (Bloomington, IL). Ratzsch was 9-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-6 from three-point range, and hit all four free throw attempts on his way to 27 points. Junior Craig Nelson (Mayville, ND) also had a good night, hitting 3-of-6 threes and 4-of-4 free throws for 13 points. Mitch Boeck (Arlington, SD) added 11 points and tied Levi Hamilton (Lincoln, NE) with a team high five rebounds.

The Marauders were led in scoring by Eric Erdmann with 18 points and Danny Sandvig with ten. Ike Ezirike led all players with seven rebounds in the contest, five of which came on the offensive end. Mary shot 31.6 percent from the field (18-57), but was much more accurate from the charity stripe, where they sunk 18-of-19 shots. UM is not eligible for postseason play.
