the bases during NSU's four-run fourth inning in the second
game against Southwest Wednesday. |
ABERDEEN,
S.D. - Perennial Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference power
Southwest State University (Marshall, Minn.) earned 7-0 and
9-5 wins over Northern Wednesday in a conference doubleheader
at Manor Park in Aberdeen.
The Mustangs
(13-13 overall, 2-0 NSIC) were able to stifle NSU's bats in
the first game, as the Wolves mustered only four hits against
SSU pitcher Jill Clark. NSU stayed in the game defensively,
trailing just 0-1 after five innings before the Mustangs put
the game away with six insurance runs in the final two innings.
In the
second game, the Mustangs wasted no time in building a big
lead, exploding for an 8-0 buldge heading into the bottom
of the fourth inning. NSU's offense came alive after that,
scoring four runs in the fourth and adding another in the
sixth while holding SSU to just one run during that time.
But it was too little, too late. In all, SSU out-hit the Wolves
21-11 on the day.
Junior
pitcher Amy Gurney (Yankton) led the Wolves on the day, going
2-for-4 with a bases-loaded double that drove in three runs.
On the mound, Gurney pitched the first game and the last four
innings of the second after freshman hurler Samantha Guinn
(Mountain Lake, Minn.) came out with an injury.
NSU (5-8,
0-4 NSIC) continues league play this weekend, traveling to
Winona State Friday before entering the NSIC Crossover at
Concordia-St. Paul Saturday and Sunday.
