Coyotes Nip Wolves In Doubleheader

March 16, 2007
VERMILLION, SD – The Northern State softball team played their first regular season games in the state of South Dakota Friday afternoon against the University of South Dakota. The Wolves (1-15) fell in both games of the doubleheader, the Coyotes (6-10) shutting out NSU 3-0 in game one and narrowly edging out a 2-1 win in game two. Jenna Drey scored NSU's sole run of the day, a solo homerun knocked to left center field.

The Wolves went errorless in the first end of the twinbill and came up with four hits in the game, but they failed to string together more than one hit per inning. Christi Schulte had two of NSU’s four knocks. The Coyotes totaled nine hits in the game and scored one run in each of the second, third, and fifth innings. The game was highlighted by a Poulter homerun in the bottom of the third, which put USD up 2-0. Northern’s Hilary Smith took the loss after giving up eight hits and three runs in five innings of work. She had two strikeouts. Gaining the win for the Coyotes was T. Jones, who struck out eight batters.

Two Northern errors in the second inning led to two unearned Coyote runs, the only times USD would cross runners over home plate in the game and enough to give the home team a win. Toeing the rubber was Christi Schulte, who pitched all six innings, giving up just three hits and striking out six batters. The Wolves threatened early in the game as Nicole Janssen knocked a triple into right center field with one out. The following batters failed to knock Janssen in and NSU would not record another hit until Jenna Drey stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning. Drey drilled Northern’s first homerun of the season into left center, bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of USD. The Wolves’ attempt at a late game comeback did not surface and the Coyotes took the 2-1 win.

The Northern sluggers will remain in Vermillion as they open play at the USD Invite on Saturday. The Wolves will play Wayne State in a non-conference bout at 4:00 pm and Morningside College at 5:45. Play will continue at 8:30 am on Sunday morning with a battle against Jamestown College and a noon meeting with South Dakota.
