Wildcats Top Wolves In Extra Innings

VERMILLION, SD – The Wolves softball team (1-17) pounded out a season high 16 hits in an extra inning non-conference loss to Wayne State (10-4) Saturday afternoon at the USD Invite. Northern fell 11-10 in nine innings as the Wildcats used a sacrifice bunt and a single to score the runner placed on second base in the ninth inning. In their final game of the day, the Wolves were defeated 9-1 by Morningside College (11-3).
Northern took a 6-3 lead in the top of the fourth inning against Wayne State with a Jenna Drey three-run homer, but the Wildcats would come back with four runs in the bottom of the inning following two NSU errors and a WSC triple. Both teams continued to score as the game progressed and, knotted up at 9-9, the game went into extra innings. Sara Lipetzky, place at second base according to extra inning regulations, scored from a Heather Olson single to center field. The Wildcats answered with a run in the bottom of the eighth and took the game in the ninth after the Wolves failed to score.
Designated hitter Hilary Smith had four hits, two runs, and two RBI against Wayne State, while Jenna Drey knocked out a three-run homer in the fourth inning, finishing the game with two hits. Five Wolves players tallied two or more hits in the game. Christi Schulte pitched 6.1 innings and took the loss for the Wolves. For the Wildcats, Humphries tallied four hits and three RBI while Hain got the win from the rubber.
The Wolves were downed 9-1 by Morningside College in their second game of the day after the team managed just three hits. Their sole score of the game came as a result of a Morningside error in the second inning. Morningside jumped out with three runs in the first inning and added five more in the sixth before finishing the game with 11 hits and nine runs.
The Wolves’ three hits were split between Nicole Janssen, Caitlin Hodges, and Smith. Smith pitched 5.1 innings and had three strikeouts in the loss.
Northern State will continue play tomorrow morning, taking on Jamestown College and South Dakota before heading back to Aberdeen.
