Smith Ends Extra Inning Game With Walk-Off Homer

VERMILLION, SD – Hilary Smith knocked out a ninth inning two-run walk-off homerun to give Northern State (2-18) a 6-4 win over South Dakota (9-11) Sunday afternoon. This marks the fourth consecutive game that an NSU player has drilled a homerun. In earlier action, the Wolves were outhit 16 to 9 in a 4-11 loss to Jamestown College (12-5) Sunday morning at the South Dakota Invite.

The Wolves went up 3-0 against the Coyotes by the end of the fifth inning, scoring first with a Christi Schulte solo homer in the fourth. USD came back to tie the game at three runs apiece in the sixth inning and the game went into bonus innings after a scoreless seventh. Both teams scored the added baserunner in the eighth and, after the Coyotes failed to score in the ninth inning, Smith walked up to the plate to end the battle with her two-run homer, giving NSU the 6-4 win.

Smith led the Wolves with three hits, two runs, and two RBI. Nicole Janssen added two hits and also tallied an RBI. This was the second straight game that Schulte knocked out a homerun. In addition to her game-winning homer, Schulte earned the win from the rubber, pitching all nine innings. She allowed the Coyotes just six hits and two earned runs and struck out five batters.

Against Jamestown College earlier in the day, Christi Schulte got the Wolves on the board in the fifth inning with a two-run knock, her first homerun of the season. The Wolves played a clean defensive game and did not give up an error, but the Jimmies had at least one hit in every inning and posted runs in five of the six innings batted. JC jumped ahead with a three-run second inning following a two-run homerun and a triple which later scored. Hodges had three hits in the game for Northern, followed by Schulte with two. Nicole Janssen knocked in NSU's other two runs with a single in the sixth inning. Hilary Smith took the loss after giving up four earned runs and eight hits.
