ABERDEEN, SD – Nearly rained out after three innings of play, the Northern State softball team managed to complete their NSIC opening doubleheader against MSU Moorhead on a chilly Thursday afternoon. The Dragons came out on top in both games, taking a 17-1 win in the first and a 9-1 win in the second.
The Wolves came out strong in the first game of the day, matching MSUM’s three-run first inning knockout with a Christi Schulte solo homer in the second to set the score at 1-3. The Dragons pulled away with six runs in the third inning following two singles, three walks, and a hit batter. The Wolves would go hitless for the remainder of the game as MSU Moorhead claimed the 17-1 win.
Schulte and Hilary Smith tallied NSU’s only hits of the game, both coming in the second inning. Schulte had the toss for the first three innings, allowing six hits and six earned runs while striking out two. Audrey Decker had the last two innings, giving up seven hits and another six earned runs, also collecting two strikeouts. Eight MSUM players recorded hits in the game with the team total reaching 13. Dragon pitcher Vancura had ten strikeouts.
Both the Dragons and the Wolves marked lead-off hits in the first inning of game two, with both runners coming around to score before the inning was out. For the Wolves, Jenna Drey doubled into center field before advancing to third on a Janssen sacrifice bunt and scoring on a wild pitch. The Wolves failed to score for the remainder of the game and ultimately gave up a 9-1 decision.
Drey, Heather Olson, and Sara Lipetzky had hits for the Wolves, while MSUM tallied 12 hits in the game. Audrey Decker took the loss for NSU after giving up three earned runs and six hits. Schulte came in for 4.1 innings of relief work and had four strikeouts. Sagehorn collected the win for MSUM, giving up just three hits and marking eight strikeouts.
The Wolves record goes to 2-22 with the losses while the Dragons improve to 11-5. The games do not count as NSIC contests. Northern returns to action on April 3, traveling for a doubleheader against the University of Mary.
