ST. PAUL, Minn. – Early runs and defensive blunders caused problems for the Northern State softball team (2-25, 0-3 NSIC) as they opened up NSIC play at a crossover hosted by Concordia-St. Paul on Monday. The Wolves gave up an 11-2 loss to Upper Iowa University (8-14, 1-2 NSIC), a 12-4 decision to Concordia-St. Paul (15-10, 2-0 NSIC), and a 9-1 loss to Winona State (18-10, 2-0 NSIC). Northern will continue play tomorrow with games against Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State.
The Wolves had a rough first inning against Upper Iowa on Monday morning, committing four errors that led to four unearned Peacock runs. The team settled down in the next two innings, however, and got their offense running in the fourth, scoring two runs off of Hilary Smith and Jill Sjoerdsma singles. The Peacocks came back with a vengeance in the bottom of the inning and knocked out eight hits for seven runs, including a two-run slam in the middle of the lineup, to set the score at 11-2. Northern's five hits were spread out between five different players and the defense was tagged with six errors. Upper Iowa had 11 hits and committed one error.

Northern went down three in a row in their first two innings against Concordia-St. Paul but got their sticks going in the third and fourth, driving in two runs each inning. Heather Olson was responsible for the team's first two RBI, scoring Sam Francis and Sjoerdsma with a double to right center field. Caitlin Hodges added another RBI with a double in the fourth inning, scoring Smith. Hodges came around to score after Christi Schulte put the ball on the ground in the next at-bat. The Wolves had six hits and, from the rubber, Smith struck out three in four innings of work.
The Golden Bears saw offensive success as well, scoring six earned runs in the second inning and six combined unearned runs in the first and third innings. The top five batters caused the most problems for the Wolves as they totaled all ten of CSP's hits and scored 11 of the team's 12 runs. Concordia's Brundidge batted 3-for-3 in the game with a three-run homer and four total RBI.

Just as the other two opponents did in the day, the Warriors of Winona State scored early and took advantage of an NSU error to tally runs. WSU notched five runs in the first inning, batting around the horn and coming up with five singles. Wilhelm added three more runs in the fifth inning with a single swing and an earned run in the sixth gave WSU their final score of 9 runs. The Wolves were able to come up with just two hits in the game, but limited their errors to just one. Two Warrior errors in the third inning led to Northern's unearned run with the RBI going to Smith. Smith also had a double earlier in the game.
Smith had the most productive bat on the day, going 3-for-7 with two RBI and one run scored. Heather Olson also notched two RBI. Smith, Schulte, and Audrey Decker shared time from the rubber with each player taking one loss. Smith and Schulte each notched three strikeouts.
