CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Northern State softball team came up with their first NSIC wins of the season, taking both games of a doubleheader at MN-Crookston Wednesday afternoon. The Wolves (4-29, 2-7 NSIC) had their sticks going against the Golden Eagles (1-20, 0-9 NSIC) as they notched nine hits in each game played. They pulled off an extra inning 2-1 win in game one after nine innings of work and took the second game 3-2 in regulation.

Game 1
The Golden Eagles scored the first run of the day in the fifth inning of game one, their solo score of the game which was unearned. The Wolves came back in the sixth inning to tie the game up as Sara Lipetzky, who reached after being hit by a pitch, scored after a shortstop fielding error later in the inning. The dual remained knotted up until the ninth inning when pinch hitter Jill Sjoerdsma drilled a single which scored Courtney Halsey who was waiting at second base. Christi Schulte shut out the bottom of the inning with two fly balls and a strikeout to gain the win.

Despite being struck out ten times by UMC pitcher Klassen, the Wolves came up with nine hits, their best offensive production in 11 games. Lipetzky (Sioux Falls, SD) went 2-for-4 in the game with two singles and one run scored and Sam Francis (Elk River, MN) also went 2-for-4 with a set of one-baggers. Schulte (2-14) kept UMC to just five hits while tallying eight strikeouts, which matches a personal and team season high.

Game 2
Game two of the twinbill was also close, but the Wolves' three-run fifth inning put them on top for the 3-2 win. The Golden Eagles once again scored first in the game with a solo run in the first inning and added another run on in the fourth to go up 2-0. All of Northern's plays in the fifth came on two outs. Halsey reached first with a single, followed by Drey with a single. Lipetzky hit the team's third straight single, a solid knock that scored Halsey. Drey crossed the plate following a UMC error to tie up the game. Heather Olson kept the good times rolling with a double, scoring Lipetzky and putting the Wolves ahead for good.

Hilary Smith (Brainerd, MN) and Nicole Janssen (Fireston, CO) led the team with two hits each, but the RBI of the game went to Lipetzky and Olson. Halsey batted 1-for-3 and scored a run. Pitching duties were split nearly even between Audrey Decker and Schulte, with Schulte (3-14) gaining the win. Leading all players was UMC's Nyhus, who had three hits and scored one of the team's two runs.

The Wolves will return to Moccasin Creek Complex for a doubleheader with Bemidji State on Friday before hosting the NSIC Crossover on Saturday and Sunday.
