MARSHALL, Minn. – The Wolves softball team (9-41) played the Mustangs from SW Minnesota State extremely tough in the first round of the NSIC conference tournament, which is being held in Marshall, Minn. Despite playing well, the Wolves fell to the Mustangs 2-5. In the second game of the day versus the Upper Iowa Peacocks, which was a must-win game for both teams, the Wolves would fall 1-9 to end their 2007 season.
GAME 1 of NSIC Tournament
In round one of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament, the Northern State Wolves were matched up with the #1 seed SW Minnesota State. The Mustangs defeated the Wolves by scores of 0-11 and 1-10 earlier in the year. This time the Wolves would put up a great battle. Despite out-hitting the Mustangs 9 to 6, the Wolves made four errors that cost them the game.
The Wolves took a 2-0 lead off of a Christi Schulte single to center field which scored Hilary Smith and Jenna Drey. The lead was short lived as the Mustangs would take the lead for good off of an Amanda Opitz 3 run home run. The Mustangs would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure their first round victory.
The Wolves were led offensively by Schulte, Smith, and Hodges with two hits each in the game. Opitz led the Mustangs as she went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Christi Schulte fell to 7-17 on the year with the loss. She went 6.0 innings giving up six hits and three earned runs while striking out four Mustangs. Nicole Fringer improved to 9-5, going 4 1/3 innings giving up eight hits, two earned runs, and striking out three. Amanda Johnson got the save as she went 2 2/3 innings only giving up one hit and striking out seven.
GAME 2 of NSIC Tournament
In the second game of the day at the conference tournament, the Wolves would struggle to get any runs across and would fall 1-9 in six innings to the Upper Iowa Peacocks. The Wolves scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lea, but the Peacocks went on to score in every inning except the first to advance in the tournament.
In the game, the Wolves were led by Nicole Janssen as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Heather Olson as she went 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Peacocks were led by Sinwell as she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kilburg, J., Gress, Kilburg, K., and Applet would all get two hits for the Peacocks.
Audrey Decker took the loss for the Wolves as she went 5 2/3 innings giving up 13 hits, nine earned runs, and striking out two. Loan got the win for the Peacocks in six innings, giving up six hits, one earned run, and striking out two.
Five Northern State seniors played in their last game of their careers. They are Audrey Decker, Jenna Drey, Caitlin Hodges, Christi Schulte, and Sara Lipetzky.
