Northern State dominated play and defeated Bemidji State 3-0 under glorious skies at The Grounds Sunday.
After a frustrating loss Saturday to nationally-ranked and two-time defending conference champion Minnesota-Duluth, the Wolves took the pitch with venom and purpose. NSU scored three goals in 32 minutes to put the match into the hands of the defense and out of reach for the Beavers. Once again, the defense came up with a clean sheet behind stellar play from the back four and the keeper.
NSU opened scoring in the fourth minute of play on a splendid strike from junior forward Melissa Lehr (Aberdeen) off a pass from sophomore sweeper Kristie Gordy (Cheyenne, Wyo.). Lehr continued her hot streak offensively when she neatly tucked away a ball that was loose in the area during the 19th minute. In the past two weeks, Lehr has scored eight goals. Also scoring for the Wolves Sunday was sophomore forward Becky Valdez (Cheyenne, Wyo.) off a pass from senior midfielder Angie Trudeau (Rapid City). Valdez made a nifty move using her unfavored left foot to leave the defender in the wake on her way to goal.
The Wolves outshot the Beavers 37-6 on the day, constantly giving the home supporters something to cheer about. During the offensive onslaught, the Wolves had several chances to score but failed to frame the goal.
The Wolves played well despite the loss of top marking back Nikki VonSeggern (sophomore, Cheyenne, Wyo.), who suffered a heavily sprained ankle early in the Duluth match Saturday. She is listed as questionable for this week.
