Twenty Fourth in DII Average Attendance
ABERDEEN, S.D. - Northern State Women's Soccer finished the 2005 season 24th in average home DII attendance in the nation. The Wolves home attendance totaled 2,376 as they averaged 237 over 10 games. This was the highest attendance for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference member.
Seven Named to the Scholar All-Central Region Team
Melissa Gamble junior forward from Calgary, Alberta was named to the Honorable Mention Scholar All Central Region team for her academic excellence in Health and Physical Education.
Lissa Heaviland a senior defenseman from Golden, Colo. was named to the Third Team Scholar All-Central Region for her academic excellence in Health and Physical Education.
Liz Malatesta a junior midfielder from Cheyenne, WY was named to the Honorable Mention Scholar All-Central Region team for her academic success in Biology.
Lara Steen a senior defensive player from Brookings, SD was named to the Honorable Mention Scholar All-Central Region team for her academic excellence in English.
Theresa Alexander a junior goalkeeper from Cooper City, FL was named to the Honorable Mention Scholar All-Central Region team for her academic success in Pre-Law.
Jillian Laydon a senior midfielder from Arvada, Colo. was named to the Honorable Mention Scholar All-Central Region team for her academic success in English.
Skadi Davison a junior midfielder from West Fargo, N.D. was named to the Honorable Mention Scholar All-Central Region team for her academic success in Biology.
NSU Soccer has Two Named to the All-Central Team
Melissa Gamble a junior from Calgary, Alberta was named Second Team All-Central Region team as a forward by the 2005 NSCAA/adidas® NCAA Division II Women All-Central Region. Gamble broke the NSU record for goals in a career which, was previously held by Kersten Coulter. She now has 38 goals in her career. Gamble led the Wolves in goals (10), points (22) and game winning goals with (7).
Lissa Heaviland a senior from Golden, Colo. was named Second Team All-Central Region at defense by the 2005 NSCAA/adidas® NCAA Division II Women All-Central Region. Heaviland anchored a Wolves defense that posted 11 shut-outs on the season, nine of them being in the regular season.
All-Conference Performers
Northern State had five soccer players named to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) All-Conference teams.
Melissa Gamble a junior from Calgary, Alberta was named First Team All-Conference as a forward. Gamble broke the NSU record for goals in a career which was previously held by Kersten Coulter. She now has 38 goals in her career. Gamble led the Wolves in goals (10), points (22) and game winning goals with (7). In conference games Gamble was second in the conference in shots with 53 and third in the conference in shot per game with 3.79. Gamble was tied for fourth in points with 22. She had 10 goals and 2 assists on the season. Gamble was sixth in the conference in points per game with 1.05. Gamble also led the conference in game winning goals with 7 on the season. She was also tied for third in the conference in goals with 10 and sixth in goals per game with .48. Gamble was named to ESPN the Magazine’s Academic All-District 2nd Team.
Lissa Heaviland a senior from Golden, Colo. was named First Team All-Conference at defense. Heaviland was named to ESPN the Magazine’s Academic All-District 2nd Team. This is Heaviland fourth year in a row that she has been named to the NSIC All-Conference Team. Heaviland anchored a Wolves defense that posted 11 shutouts on the season, nine of them being in the regular season.
Suanne Lampert a senior from Golden, Colo. was named Second Team All-Conference at midfielder. This is the third year in a row the Lampert was named to First or Second Team All-Conference. Lampert recorded 12 points on the season as she had 5 goals and 2 assists. Lampert also had 2 game winning goals on the season which tied her for second on the team.
Liz Malatesta a junior from Cheyenne, WY was named to the Second Team All-Conference at midfielder. Malatesta tied for seventh in the conference with 5 assists on the season and tied for 10th with .23 assists per game. She led the Wolves with 5 assists on the season. Liz Malatesta broke the record for assists in a career. She now has 28 assists at Northern State.
Heather Bartlett a sophomore from Overland Park, KS was named Honorable Mention All-Conference. Bartlett was second on the team with 17 points which consisted of 7 goals and 3 assists. In all games Bartlett was second in shot with 76 and fourth in shots per game with 3.45. In conference games she was third in shots with 48 and fifth in shots per game with 3.43. Bartlett also tied for ninth with 17 points on the season and tenth in goals with 7.
Season Wrap-up

Northern State finished their season 14-5-3, 7-5-2 NSIC. The
Wolves finished third in the NSIC during the regular season
behind Winona State and Bemidji State.
For the first time ever the Wolves made it to the Championship
game of the NSIC tournament were they played #14 Winona
State. The two teams played regulation and the two overtimes to
a 0-0 tie. Then they went to a shoot-out were the Wolves were
defeated 1-3. The Wolves finished second in the tournament.
Suanne Lampert (Sr., MF., Golden, Colo.) and Liz Malatesta (Jr.,
M., Cheyenne, Wyo.) were named to the NSIC all- tournament
team.
During the season the Wolves had eleven shutouts on the season
and outscored their opponents 31-15. The Wolves had five players
named to the NSIC All-Conferecne teams. Melissa Gamble
and Lissa Heaviland were named to the 1st team, Suanne Lampert
and Liz Malatesta were named to the 2nd team, and Heather
Bartlett was named Honorable Mention.
Four Seniors played their last game against Winona State on
November 6 in the NSIC Championship game. They are Lara,
Steen, Suanne Lampert, Jill Laydon, and Lissa Heaviland.
Gamble & Heavliand Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2nd Team
Northern State soccer players Melissa Gamble and Lissa Heaviland have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District women's soccer team. Both Gamble and Heaviland were named to the District 7 second team.
District 7, which consists of NCAA II, NCAA III, and NAIA school from Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Alberta, Saskatchewan, was voted on by sports information directors from schools in the district.
Gamble (Jr., F, Calgary, AB) led the regular season in the NSIC in game winning goals for the second consecutive year as she netted seven this season. She was third in the league in points (1.16 pg) and goals per game (0.58 pg). Gamble currently holds a 3.75 GPA as she is majoring in Elementary Education and minors in coaching.
Heaviland (Sr., D, Golden, Colo.) anchored a Wolves defense that had eight shut outs during the regular season as the Wolves scored their opponents 29-14. Heaviland holds a 3.79 GPA as she majors in health & physical education and minors in coaching.
Northern State University (located in Aberdeen, SD) is an NCAA Division II institution and a member of the
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
