ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Northern State soccer team extended their winning streak to five games with a 1-0 win over Concordia-St. Paul (3-11-2, 1-4-0 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon. This is the third straight game that the Wolves have finished with a 1-0 win; they have won by a single goal 1-0 score in four of their five last games. Northern is 12-3-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the league.
The Wolves took advantage of a scoring opportunity in the first period on the chilly, cloudy day. Aleasha DeVaney took a shot that was blocked and rebounded to midfielder KaSara Sutton. Sutton (Fr, MF, Aberdeen, S.D.) booted the ball in the net to put the Wolves up 1-0 at the 33:29 mark, her fourth goal of the season. This would be all the scoring that Northern would need as Kit Grace and Dee Wood combined to shut out the Golden Bears in the game.
The Wolves took 14 shots in the game and had three shots on goal. Northern showed aggression in CSP territory and was awarded eight corner kicks. A strong defensive effort resulted in Concordia getting off just five shots and two shots on goal. Both saves were made by Grace, who spent just over 56 minutes in the net.
The Wolves continue to lead the NSIC standings and were ranked #6 in the first Central Region poll of the year, released last week by the NCAA. They host UM, Crookston and Bemidji State next Saturday and Sunday with both game times set for 1:00 pm.
