After a beautiful day to open the NSIC Multi Event Championships on Sunday April 24th the weather took a turn for the worst on Monday as high winds, cooler tempatures and some rain came to Swisher Track in Aberdeen. The weather did have an effect on the meet as the pole vault for men had to be stopped a couple of times to allow the rain to pass. The weather did not seem to effect the home team as the men from Northern State University swept the top three spots in the Decathlon. Junior Eric Schwan took the top spot with a two day point total of 5,675 points. Schwans javelin throw of 170' 7" gave him a comfortable 180 point lead over teammate Jesse Heinz going into the last event of the day, the gruiling 1,500 meter run. Heinz, the 2005 NSIC Indoor Heptathlon Champion, finished in 2nd place with 5,528 points, followed by teammate Ryan Rogenes in third with 5,309 points. “I could not be any more happy for our squads than I was on Saturday. Both of our team’s had really strong performances. We had set two main goals going into the meet. First, we wanted to win the combined team championship, which we did. Secondly, we wanted to create an atmosphere that would lead to great performances. I wanted the kids to get on a roll where one athlete would see a teammate do well and that would get them going and they would do well and then keep that going throughout the meet. It all started with the multi kids two weeks ago where Katie, Jesse, Eric, and Ryan got us off to a great start. Then we had first and second place finishes on Friday night in the medley relays, but then on Saturday morning when Gena won the weight throw on the last throw of the competition that really lead to the two, three, four finish for the men in the weight and that was really big for the men, because we really hurt Bemidji’s chances there to win the meet. They were counting on some big points in that men’s weight and we really got on a roll after that event. Then the track events started with the women’s mile where Lindsey won going away and from that point on it seemed like we were winning or placing high in every event. What a great day to be a wolf.

NSIC MULTI-EVENT CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Wolves did not disappoint the home fans Sunday and Monday at the NSIC Multi-Event Championships; as they collected 2 All-Conference awards and one repeat champion.

Junior Jesse Heinz (Ipswich, SD) repeated as the Multi-Event champion on the men’s side while Junior Katie Anderson (Groton, SD) collected a runner-up finish for the women’s team.

Heinz the 2004 Indoor Pentathlon champ added a Heptathlon championship to his collection this year as the NSIC changed the indoor multi-event from a Pentathlon ( 5 events ) to a Heptathlon ( 7 events ) for the 2005 indoor season. As the events champion he established a new NSIC record in the process and set a new NSU school record, but it was not an easy two days for Heinz. He ended day 1 in third place and did not take over the point lead until the final event, the grueling 1,000 meter run. The wolves, who have produced a long line of talented multi-event athletes, put three men in the top five as Junior Eric Schwan (Aberdeen, SD) and Senior Ryan Rogenes (Glasgow, MT) placed third and fifth respectively in the event. Head Coach Jim Fuller said he was very happy with the performance of all of his athletes in the Multi-Event competition, “ We have taken great pride over the years in preparing or multi kids and then watching them succeed, the efforts that Jesse, Eric, and Ryan put forth today were outstanding and the 18 points that they have put up for our men’s squad for the NSIC indoor championships will be needed if we are going to be a team that is competing for a top team finish in that meet.”

Katie Anderson (Jr., Groton, SD ) continued to show the NSIC that she is one of the best all-around athletes to compete in the conference, both Anderson and eventual champ Deidra Faber, from Winona State University, broke the meet record of 3,209 points as the two talented women battled for the NSIC crown. “ I am very proud of Katie and her performance today, I know how badly she wanted to win this meet and I am sure that she is disappointed to place second, but she had a great meet. A new NSU school record and a point total that broke the old NSIC record show me that she really did a great job. She and the Winona girl have had some great competitions and each one has beaten the other, I would guess that they will meet up again in two or three events next week at the NSIC meet and will continue to produce great events.”

Overall it was an outstanding weekend for the Northern Squad as they continue to look forward to the quickly approaching NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Bemidji State University at the end of the month. Next up for the Wolves will be the Bison Classic in Fargo on Friday Feb 18.

PRAIRIE WOLF INVITE

The wolves began a four-day stretch of track and field with the Prairie Wolf Invite hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan University at the Bob Devany Sports Center on the Campus of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln Nebraska on Friday night. Although it was a long road trip for the Northern squad it was well worth the trip as the Wolves came away with two new school records and a host of seasons best efforts. The meet, which featured over thirty colleges from across the Midwest and over 1,000 athletes, was some of the best competition the squad has faced this season.

Senior Lindsey Lesnar (Webster, SD) had a hand in both school records. After coming close to the 1,000 meter run record at this meet last year, she left no doubt she meant business this year, running 3:02.15 good enough for a third place finish in the large field of 19 athletes. Lesnar then joined forces with Katy Hilton (Fr., Mitchell, SD), Megan Konechne (Jr., Kimball SD), and Jenny Baus (Fr., Veblen, SD) to set a new school record in the 4 X 400 meter relay of 4:05.28. Prior to the relay Hilton, Konechne, and Baus had each put up seasons best time in the 400 meters, 200 meters, and 600 meter run respectively.

In the men’s competition Sophomore Josh Baltzell (Aberdeen, SD) ran to a seventh place finish in the 600 meter run with a personal best time of 1:23.23. That time ranks him second in the NSIC this season. BHSU Results

The wolves headed out west this past week to take part in the Black Hills State University / Dave Little Invitational. The meet is named after long time CC/Track Coach and BHSU Athletic Director Dave Little. This past year Little was honored at Northern State University with the Jim Kretchman Award for outstanding service to the coaching profession. Little was a cross country and track and field athlete at Northern and is an alumni of the university.

Northern was lead by a group of twelve athletes that were multiple place winners in individual events at the meet. In what Coach Fuller termed a “workman like effort” the wolves squad turned in a strong showing at the meet. “ This meet falls at a point in our season that our main objective is to get in some good efforts in a meet setting. Our multi event athletes got the chance to work on a variety events that were not always their best event, we got to run three men’s mile relays, and we were able to get marks in the 600 meters and 1,000 meters for many of the middle distance runners that might run those events at the NSIC meet, but have not been to a meet where they were offered in the meet schedule until now “ said Fuller.

Multiple event place winners included :
Katie Anderson ( Jr Groton SD ) 5 th 55 hurdles and 5 th HJ
Jenny Baus ( Fr Veblen SD ) 5 th 1,000 and 6 th 600
Jenny Betz ( So Webster SD ) 7 th 55 hurdles and 7 th LJ
Erin Fry ( So Lisbon ND ) 2 nd mile and 6 th 1,000
Lindsey Lesnar ( Sr Webster SD ) 2 nd 600 and 4 th 1,000
Gena Meier ( Jr Plevna MT ) 2 nd weight throw and 4 th shot put
Josh Baltzell ( So Aberdeen SD ) 3 rd 1,000 and 5 th 600

Northern State vs. Jamestown Dual

The Barnett Center once again hosted the annual Northern State University / Jamestown College Indoor Track and Field Dual meet on Tuesday the 25 th of January. The annual event started 17 years ago and is the longest current running collegiate track dual meet in the Midwest, in fact it is one of the few dual meets held. The meet has seen many close finishes over the years and this year was no exception, as the Wolves men held a one point advantage after 14 of the 15 events, 72 to 71, but with their win in the 4 X 400 meter relay the Jimmies captured the meet 76 to 75. “ It seems as though this meet comes down to the 4 X 4 either on the women’s side or the men’s side every year” said NSU veteran coach Jim Fuller. “ Rollie Greeno and I decided that this meet would be a good experience for our kids 17 years ago when I was first hired here at Northern and I am so pleased that the Jamestown coaches ( Josh Roberts and Jim Clark ) have kept it on our schedules every year since. Most college coaches really don’t want to run dual meets and focus on the team aspect of track and field, but I really feel that going into the NSIC meet without a scored meet would hurt our teams. These types of meets always bring out some great performances and this year was no exception”.

Gena Meier lead the women’s squad with a new personal best and the winning weight throw of 48’1”, she went on to add a third place in the shot put. Multi event athlete Katie Anderson scored in 4 events for the Wolves, with her best effort of the night being a season best time in the 55 meter hurdles of 8.65 also good enough for first place.

The men’s team was lead by a strong evening in the throwing events, where Northern took five of the top six places, going 1 2 3 in the weight throw and 1 2 in the shot put. The long jump might have been the event of the night with five jumpers between 21’4” and 22’4”where Northern athletes placed 2 3 5.

The Wolves next action will be Saturday the 29 th of January, as Northern travels to the BHSU Dave Little Invitational in Spearfish SD.

USD HILLENDRAND OPEN

The Northern State University Track and Field teams saw their first official action of the 2005 indoor season Friday and Saturday January 14 th and 15 th at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion SD, with both the men and women putting up some impressive results for an early season meet. The men were lead again by Matt Anderson ( Princeton MN, Jr ) and his second place performance in the High Jump ( 6’ 6” ). Anderson ended his day with a near clearance at the NCAA II qualifying mark of 6’ 8 ¼”. Defending NSIC Multi-Event champion Jesse Heinz ( Ipswich SD, Jr ) opened his season placing third in the Pentathlon with a solid 3213 point total. Most notable within the Pentathlon was Heinz High Jump where he cleared 6’ 31/2”. Distance runners Matt Scott ( Watertown SD, So ) and Matt Walberg ( Aberdeen SD, Fr ) teamed up with 5 th and 6 th place finishes in the 3,000 meters with times of 9:06 and 9:09 and look to be in the same form that lead the men to an NSIC championship in CC last fall. Throwers Nick Davis ( Ipswich SD, So ), Garret Pfitzer ( Mobridge SD, Jr ) and Troy Brock ( Huron SD, So ) put together 4 place winning throws in the Shot Put and Weight Throw.

The women’s throwers were not to be outdone, Gena Meier ( Plevna MT, Jr ), Jocelyn Plooster ( Corsica SD, So ) and Christine Heffernan ( Denver CO, Fr ) also combined for 4 place winners in the throwing events. Lindsey Lesnar ( Webster SD, Sr ) continued to run well with a personal best in the 800 meters of 2:23.52 good enough for 3 rd place.

The wolves also opened the season up with a couple of strong relay showings with the men’s 4 x 400 meter relay and women’s 4 x 400 meter relay teams both placing, 3 rd and 6 th respectively.

The wolves next action with be a home affair, as the annual dual meet with the Jimmie’s of Jamestown College will begin with Field events at 6:00 pm and track events at 7:30 pm on Tuesday January 25 th.

USD PRESEASON OPEN

The Northern State University Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams opened their indoor season with a very limited group at the USD Preseason Open on Thursday December 9 th in Vermillion SD at the Dakota Dome. “ This meet is really just a chance for some of our upperclassmen to see where they are fitness wise” said Head Track Coach Jim Fuller. “ I thought a couple of our sprinter/hurdlers and a couple of our multi-event kids were ready for a meet while it was best for the vast majority of our squad to remain home and just do some time trials in the Barnett Center” noted Fuller.

Chang Beachem ( So. Westminster, CO ) opened his season with a personal best in the 60 m dash of 7.08 and a strong 5 th place finish in a field that included a couple of post collegiate athletes that were former NCAA D II All-Americans ( one of which was his coach and former Northern State star Micah Arnold ).

Lindsey Lesnar ( Sr. Webster, SD ) who is coming off an outstanding Cross Country season ( 2 nd NSIC ) opened her indoor campaign with a solid 2:24.35 in the 800 m run, good enough for 4 th place.

Junior Matt Anderson ( Princeton, MN ) jumped near his personal best in the high jump. The returning All-NSIC selection took home 2 nd place with a clearance of 6’6”.

With an early look of what will be to come, the only Freshman that participated for the wolves, Jake Hamik ( Aberdeen, SD ) had a very strong performance in the 60 m hurdles placing 8 th with a time of 8.72 in the prelims and 8.75 in the finals. This was impressive for a freshman that prefers to run the 400 m hurdles ( Hamik owns the second fasted time in SD prep history in the 300 m hurdles ), but will certainly see double duty for the wolves this season in both hurdle races.

Fuller expects about seventy-five percent of the 60 plus NSU squad to open their indoor season back at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion after the semester break on January 14/15 at the Bill Hillenbrand Invitational. The wolves will open their home season with a dual against Jamestown College on Tuesday January 25 in the Barnett Center

"Overall, I am very pleased with our recruiting class. It is obvious that we wanted to add middle distance, distance and cross country runners to our squad. We emphasized that in our recruiting and I think that both our cross-country and track & field teams will be stronger this year. I am also pleased that we were able to attract great quality with five State Champions. Lastly, we have always tried to recruit our area and with five Aberdeen athletes and many of the group from northeast South Dakota, we have stayed true to our purpose of recruiting area athletes. We know that the high school kids in this area can compete in the NSIC and NCAA, but I am also pleased that we could add some athletes from West River, Montana, and North Dakota. It will give our squad a good mix this year. I am really looking forward to watching these kids grow and mature over the next four years."
