NSU Signs First Tennis Athlete

ABERDEEN, SD – The Northern State tennis team has signed its first athlete for competition in 2007. Kelsey Lonning, a local tennis player who attends Roncalli High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Northern State and becomes the first name on the roster for NSU's new tennis program.

"I'm excited about Kelsey signing with us, and it's particularly exciting to have our first recruit for the renewal of the Wolves' tennis program be a local standout tennis player," says NSU tennis coach Jessie Daw.

Lonning is a right-handed player who brings four years of varsity playing experience. She played in the top position for both singles and doubles her junior and senior seasons and, last July, took first place in the 4.5 singles competition in the Hub City Tournament. Lonning was the Roncalli female athlete nominee for the Wendy's High School Heisman Trophy. She served as team captain this past season and was named Academic All-State and team MVP. Throughout her career, Lonning also received the Tiger Award and was named Most Improved. In addition to her athletic accomplishments, Lonning has also excelled in the classroom. She currently has a GPA of 4.025 and plans to major in Business and Math.

"Kelsey has a strong foundation and many strengths, and I look forward to helping her develop her game even further," says Daw. "She is also an outstanding student, and I know that she will bring a standard in the classroom that will be an asset for our developing program."
