Powered by a career-high 26 points from junior forward Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy), NSU escaped Vermillion with a 75-71 win over South Dakota Tuesday.
Johannsen was equally big all over the court, pulling down a game-high seven rebounds. She also had two assists and two steals. Johannsen scored 15 of NSU's last 19 points, including 14 in a row, to stave off a late USD push.
Senior guard Jammie Coyle (Belle Fourche) added 17 points. Junior Natalie Braun (Warner) continued her solid play at power forward, coming up with four steals to go with eight points and six rebounds. Kelly Koepp led USD (1-1) with 19 points.
NSU (4-1) shot a blazing 57 percent in the first half to jump out to a a 42-34 advantage going into the break. Despite cooling off to shoot just 31 percent in the second half, the Wolves made enough plays to hang on for the win.
