NORTHERN ESCAPES MANKATO WITH WIN

Dec. 18, 1999

Junior post Natalie Braun (Warner) scored Northern's last five points to boost the Wolves over Minnesota State-Mankato 61-60 Saturday in Mankato. The win was NSU's 11th straight and extended the team's streak over North Central Conference schools to 5-0 this season. Northern is ranked 21st nationally and first in the North Central Region.

Playing at 5 p.m. in an auxiliary gym due to MS-M graduation ceremonies taking place in Otto Arena, the Wolves (11-1) built a 38-32 lead at halftime before watching the Mavericks reel off a 21-8 run to start the second half and grab a seven-point lead. NSU battled back and exchanged leads for the rest of the game. Braun tied the score at 60-60 and was fouled on the made shot attempt. After missing the blue collar 3-point possibility, she redeemed herself with three seconds left by hitting what became the game winning shot. Braun led the Wolves for the second straight game with 18 points and nine rebounds.

Pulling off an unlikely double-double was 5-foot-5 senior point guard Amanda Mikuska (Platte), who tied a career high by ripping down 10 rebounds to go with 11 points. Junior small forward Memory Johannsen (Tolstoy) netted 13 points to go with five rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
