NSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM ADDS TWO MORE
July 5, 2000
ABERDEEN, S.D. – In addition to always landing great student-athletes within the region, there is also no corner of the earth left uncovered by Northern State University's athletic recruiting effort. That fact was proven by the latest additions to NSU's women's basketball program, announced today by head coach Curt Fredrickson.
Joining the Wolves this winter will be Jessi Mostad, a 5-foot-10 forward from Langdon, N.D., and Monika Gabrielova, a 5-9 forward from the Slovak Republic in Central Europe.
As a senior at Langdon High School, Mostad helped her team to a second-place finish in the North Dakota State Class B Tournament. She is an All-State second team performer, as well as an all-region and all-state tournament pick. The versatile player averaged a double-double last season, scoring 12 points and pulling down 10 rebounds per game to go with three blocked shots per contest.
Gabrielova spent the past two seasons as a foreign exchange student at Diamond High School in Anchorage, Alaska. As a senior, she earned all-state and all-region honors while averaging 13 points, six rebounds and four steals per game. She's also spent two years on the Slovakian Junior National Team.
The latest additions to NSU's program will join six high school standouts on the court for NSU this winter. NSU's earlier recruits include Rapid City Central 5-9 guard Ellen Anderson; Miller 5-8 guard Liza Sizer; Litchfield (Minn.) 5-7 guard Carin Rambow; St. Louis Park (Minn.) 6-0 center Natalie Hopkins; Austin (Minn.) 5-9 forward Gina Golberg and Fargo South (N.D.) 5-7 guard Renae Whitford.
"With the guards and center we signed early, these two forwards give us great balance in our incoming freshman class," Fredrickson said. "Monika has some things to learn but has a great deal of basketball ability. Jessi has had two knee operations during her junior and senior seasons and hasn't had the chance to play at full strength."

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PROGRAM SIGNS FIVE HIGH SCHOOL STANDOUTS
April 12, 2000
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Northern State University's women's basketball program signed
five high school standouts to National Letters of Intent on national signing
day. NSU head coach Curt Fredrickson made that announcement today.
The recruits include two from South Dakota, two from Minnesota and one from
North Dakota. From South Dakota, NSU signed Rapid City Central guard Ellen Anderson
and Miller High School guard Liza Sizer. From Minnesota, the Wolves signed Litchfield
High School guard Carin Rambow and St. Louis Park High School center Natalie
Hopkins. From North Dakota, Northern signed Fargo South guard Renae Whitford.
The five new recruits add to NSU's early signing of 5-9 Austin High School (Minn.) standout Gina Golberg.
"The graduation of our two all-conference guards (Amanda Mikuska and Jammie Coyle) was a factor in the recruiting process," NSU head coach Curt Fredrickson said. "With the junior guards we have and our incoming freshmen class, we will be solid in the guard positions. With Jessica Braun and Amanda Mollman, who both redshirted, this freshman class could be as solid as we have ever had."
Carin Rambow, 5-7 guard, Litchfield, Minn. (Litchfield HS) – Rambow led the state of Minnesota in 3-point baskets made with 74 in 22 games. A four-year starter, she ended her career with over 1,400 points and was also solid on the defensive side of the ball, coming up with 75 steals in her senior season. She was named Most Valuable Player in her conference, along with being named to the Minnesota All-State second team. Carin averaged 21 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists per game while shooting 41 percent from the 3-point line during her senior season. Carin will also be a pitcher on NSU's women's softball team.
Natalie Hopkins, 6-0 center, Minneapolis, Minn. (St. Louis Park HS) – An all-conference and all-metro team honorable mention performer, Natalie averaged 19 points and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 53 percent from the field and 73 percent from the free-throw line.
Ellen Anderson, 5-9 guard, Rapid City (Central HS) – Ellen is an all-conference performer and was voted team Most Valuable Player. She was also selected to the South Dakota North All-Star team and will compete in the All-Star games this summer in Aberdeen. Anderson netted 39 3-pointers this season, averaging 12 points, three assists and three steals per game. Anderson will also participate on NSU's women's soccer team.
Liza Sizer, 5-8 guard, Miller (Miller HS) – Sizer was a three-year MVP of her high school team, an academic all-state selection, and will play for the North Team during this summer's South Dakota All-Star games in Aberdeen. Sizer averaged 21 points, six rebounds and four assists this year. She ended her career 952 points.
Renae Whitford, 5-7 guard, Fargo, N.D. (South HS) – Whitford helped Fargo South to an EDC co-championship this season. A three-year starter, Whitford made the 1999 Class A All-Tournament team, and is the Bruins' season record holder for 3-point field goals made with 45, shooting 41 percent from the 3-point line. Whitford averaged 13 points, three steals and three assists per game her senior year. She'll play for the Class A All-Stars in the North Dakota All-Star games this summer.
Last season, Northern finished 26-6 overall and made the program's third national post-season berth in just its fifth year under the NCAA Division II affiliation. Although the Wolves didn't shoot well, going just 29-of-84 (35 percent) for the game, they made up for it by dominating the boards. NSU outrebounded UMC 63-42. An even more indicative sign of how the game went: NSU had more offensive rebounds (32) than defensive (31).
NSU’S DOUBLE-DOUBLE CLUB — Northern State has had 10 double-double performances by four players this season. They are:
Nov. 6: Natalie Braun vs. Barry University 13 points, 12
rebounds
Nov. 27: Natalie Braun at Black Hills State 22 points, 10 rebounds
Dec. 6: Jammie Coyle vs. Nebraska-Omaha 18 points, 10 rebounds

Jan. 29: Natalie Braun vs. Wayne State 13 points, 10 rebounds
MINNESOTA-DULUTH SCOUT — Minnesota-Duluth ended 1999 with a big win over nationally-ranked Michigan Tech and has started the new millennium like gangbusters. The Bulldogs have not yet lost a game in 2000 and are winners of 11 straight overall going into Friday’s contest at Minnesota-Morris. UMD is not only winning, but blowing by its opponents by 19 points per game, a winning margin ranked eighth nationally.
UMD’s balanced offense, ranked 11th nationally in scoring, is fueled by the play of 6-1 sophomore post Kate Madrinich, who leads the team in scoring with nearly 16 points per game to go with nearly six rebounds per contest. Senior 6-0 veteran Sue Fierois right behind with 13.1 ppg to go with 5.8 rpg. Rounding out UMD’s double-digit scorers is 5-11 junior guard Laura Hanson, who nets 12.3 ppg. Despite UMD’s all-around height, it is 5-7 junior guard Susan Anderson who leads the team in rebounding, pulling down six boards per game. Anderson also leads the team in asists (6.4 apg) and steals (2.9 spg) to wo with 5.5 ppg.
LAST TIME vs. UMD — It was a slugfest between two of the best in the Northern
Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the North Central Region. When it was all
said and done, Minnesota-Duluth held serve on its homecourt with an 84-77 win
Jan. 7.
The UMD win stopped a 14-game winning streak for NSU. Senior guards Jammie Coyle
(Belle Fourche) and Amanda Mikuska (Platte) kept the Wolves in the game throughout,
with Coyle scoring a game-high 28 points and Mikuska adding 17 to go with a
team-high five assists. Junior post Jennifer Murphy (Aberdeen) led NSU on the
boards with seven rebounds. Sue Fiero led UMD (9-3, 4-0) with 22 points.

NORTHERN STATE REMAINS AT THIRD IN NORTH CENTRAL REGION
Feb. 9, 2000
For the second straight week, Northern State is ranked third in the North Central Region.
The NCAA II regional poll, which is conducted by the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Committee, came out today. NSU earned its first-ever first place ranking Dec. 15 and held it for five straight polls before dropping to third last week.
NSU's ranking is an impressive feat, considering the last seven national championship teams in Division II have come from the North Central Region (North Dakota won the last three, North Dakota State four straight before that). Northern joined the NCAA II ranks for the 1995-96 season. The Wolves won two NAIA national championships in the early 1990's.

FREDRICKSON NOTCHES 500TH CAREER VICTORY FRIDAY NIGHT
Feb. 4, 2000
ABERDEEN, S.D. – No coach in NCAA Division II basketball has won a greater percentage of games through a longer period of time than Northern State University women's coach Curt Fredrickson. Friday night, the Aberdeen native notched his 500th win in an 86-44 decision at Minnesota-Crookston.
Midway through his 21st season at the helm of Northern's women's program, Fredrickson's career mark now stands at 500-112. That 82 percent winning clip through over two decades is unparalleled in NCAA Division II basketball. In fact, there are only four coaches with a greater winning percentage over a longer period of time at any level of collegiate basketball:
* Adolph Rupp: Rupp coached men's teams at University of Kansas in 1923 and at University of Kentucky from 1931-52 and 1954-72, ending his career with an 876-190 record (82.2 percent) through 41 years.
* Clair Bee: Bee coached men's Division I basketball at Rider from 1929-31 and at LIU-Brooklyn from 1932-45 and 1946-51, ending his career with a 412-87 record (82.6 percent) through 21 years.
* Pat Summitt: Summitt is in her 25th season as University of Tennessee's head women's coach. Entering the season, her career mark stood at 695-146 (82.6 percent).
* Phillip Kahler: Kahler is in his 26th season as women's basketball coach at NCAA Division III St. John Fisher's (Rochester, N.Y.). Entering this season, his career mark stood at 610-114 (84.3 percent).
Fredrickson became the fourth active NCAA II women's basketball coach to reach 500 wins. Barbara Stevens is well over 500 wins in her 23rd season at Bentley (Waltham, Mass.), while the other two coaches hit the mark earlier this season (West Texas A&M coach Bob Schneider in his 22nd season and North Dakota State's Amy Ruley in her 21st season). Fredrickson also ranks fourth among current NCAA II women's basketball coaches in winning percentage, but no one above him on that list has as many wins or has coached as long.
During Fredrickson's tenure, the Wolves have played in five NAIA national tournaments, winning the NAIA II national title in 1991-92 and 1993-94, finishing second in 1992-93, claiming third in 1980-81, and finishing among the final eight teams in 1994-95. Fredrickson's Wolves have also collected two district basketball championships and two regional crowns. In the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the Wolves have had five first-place and four second-place finishes under Fredrickson.
The success hasn't stopped since NSU joined the NCAA II ranks in 1995-96. The Wolves have made post-season appearances in two of their four years under the new affiliation, falling to eventual national champion North Dakota in the semifinals in 1996-97 and making another semifinal run in 1997-98 by knocking off perennial DII powerhouse North Dakota State. The Sioux and Bison have combined to win the past seven NCAA II national championships.
This season, Fredrickson's Wolves stand at 19-4 on the season. NSU is ranked 19th in the nation and this week dropped to third in the rugged North Central Region after holding the top spot for five consecutive polls.
See the following page for Fredrickson's complete bio.
Curt Fredrickson Bio
Aberdeen, S.D., native Curt Fredrickson attended Northern State University, where he was an NAIA All-American in baseball and honorable mention All-American in football. After graduating in 1974, he taught at Canton (S.D.) High School. He returned to Northern in 1976 to work on a master’s degree. Fredrickson finished in 1977 and was named the women’s basketball coach that fall.
Fredrickson coached at NSU until 1983, spending two years in private business
before returning to the women's program in 1985. In 1987-88, the Wolves were
a sparkling 28-3, won their first-ever conference title, and finished second
in the district.
During Fredrickson's tenure, the Wolves have played in five NAIA national tournaments,
winning the NAIA II national title in 1991-92 and 1993-94, finishing second
in 1992-93, claiming third in 1980-81, and finishing among the final eight teams
in 1994-95. Fredrickson's Wolves have also collected two district basketball
championships and two regional crowns. In the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference,
the Wolves have had five first-place and four second-place finishes under Fredrickson.
Some of the major highlights during the Fredrickson years at NSU were the Wolves' NAIA national championship campaigns in the early 1990's. The 1991-92 team won the national championship and finished the season with a 30-4 record. Northern advanced to the national tourney in Monmouth, Ore., with an at-large berth granted on the basis of its record and finish in the national polls. Northern advanced to win it all against Tarleton State in the national championship game.
Northern State set out to defend its national crown in 1992-93. A fourth consecutive loss to Northern Montana in the district finals robbed the Wolves of a district crown but NSU received another at-large berth to nationals. The Skylights and Wolves met up in the championship game with Northern Montana continuing to defeat the Wolves.
The Wolves made it to the title game three seasons in a row by posting wins over Tennessee Wesleyan, Panhandle State and Concordia-St. Paul in 1993-94. In a thriller against the home team, Western Oregon State University, Northern State utilized a steal and four free throws by senior Paula (Stolsmark) Krueger, to win its second national title by a score of 48-45 and finish the storybook season with a 32-1 record. Krueger is now the assistant women's basketball and head softball coach at NSU.
In 1994-95, the Wolves jumped out to 13-0 mark and set new NAIA II and NCAA II records with 45 consecutive wins from Nov. 1993 to Jan. 1995. NSU won the conference and region championships and finished the regular season ranked number one in NAIA II. NSU swept through games against College of the Ozarks and Sterling Kansas in the national tourney but the host team, Western Oregon, derailed the Wolves’ bid for back-to-back national titles. Western Oregon defeated Northern in the round of eight to end NSU’s season at 28-3.
In their first year as a Division II member in 1995-96, the Wolves featured five new starters but still managed 20 wins – four of them against North Central Conference teams – and an eighth-place regional ranking. Fredrickson notched his 400th win in the first game of the season against Augustana.
Fredrickson, 47, was named the NAIA II National Coach of the Year in 1992 and again in 1994. He has received additional coach of the year honors from the South Dakota Press Association, Royal Order of the Gyps, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, Midwest Independent Region (2) and NAIA District 12 (3). In 1992 he was inducted into the NSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
Curt’s family includes his wife, Vicki, daughter Lindsey and two boys, Cole and Blair.

NSU RANKED 14th IN THE NATION -- Northern State (18-2) moved up two spots and is ranked 14th in the nation according to the latest USA Today/WBCA Top 25 Poll released Tuesday. The Wolves received 269 votes.
The next national poll will be released Feb. 1.
NSU REMAINS ATOP NORTH CENTRAL REGION — Northern State was ranked first in the North Central Region for the fifth consecutive time this week. The NCAA II regional poll, conducted by the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Committee, came out today. NSU garnered its first-ever first place NCAA II regional ranking Dec. 15.
NSU's ranking is an impressive feat, considering the last seven national championship
teams in Division II have come from the North Central Region (North Dakota won
the last three, North Dakota State four straight before that). Northern joined
the NCAA II ranks for the 1995-96 season. The Wolves won two NAIA national championships
in the early 1990's.
Check out NSU's athletic website at http://www.northern.edu/athletic/athltcs.htm
every Wednesday afternoon for the updated North Central Region rankings.
SOUTHWEST SCOUT – Southwest State has been hot of late, winning three of its last four games, with the only loss a narrow 60-67 decision at NSIC leader Minnesota-Duluth. The Mustangs are led by some of the most prolific players in school history, including senior 5-7 guard Dani Coleman, who ranks fifth on SSU’s all-time scoring list and second on the school assists list. The two-time All-NSIC performer is averaging over 10 points per game this season and leads the team in assists.
Leading SSU in scoring is junior 5-8 guard Erin Frye, who puts up nearly 14 points per game and leads the team in steals. Rounding out SSU’s double-digit scorers is 5-11 junior forward Andrea Schreier, who nets 13 points and leads the team with 5.8 rebounds per contest.
LAST TIME — Senior point guard Amanda Mikuska simply took over down the stretch in NSU's 77-75 win over Southwest State Dec. 11, scoring NSU's final seven points in the last minute of the game to give NSU the win in Marshall, Minn.
With the score tied at 70-70, Mikuska's steal and layup with 56 seconds remaining put the Wolves up by two. On SSU's next possession, 5-9 junior forward Natalie Braun (Warner) rebuffed SSU 6-2 post Shelly Honerman's shot and Mikuska was right there to scoop up the rejection. After an NSU timeout, the two would then hook up on the other side of the court for the play of the game, when Braun's pass found Mikuska open and ready to nail the coffin with a clutch 3-pointer that put the Wolves up by five with 13 seconds remaining.
The Mustangs came right back with a 3-pointer of the their own by Erin Frye, who ended the game with a career-best 30 points. But SSU's miracle comeback attempt hit the wall when the Mustangs were forced to foul Mikuska on the ensuing inbounds pass. Mikuska stepped up and knocked down both attempts with five seconds remaining to ice the game. She ended the game with 13 points and six rebounds.
SERIES vs. SSU — Northern holds a 31-2 lead over Southwest in the teams’ all-time series. SSU’s only wins came during the 1995-96 and 1998-99 seasons. The Mustangs have never beaten NSU in Aberdeen (0-15).
Last season, NSU defeated SSU 66-63 in the Barnett Center. The Wolves were led by Memory Johannsen’s 19 points, while Southwest’s Erin Frye netted 16 to lead the Mustangs. The win was No. 475 in the career of NSU coach Curt Fredrickson. SSU would later defeat the Wolves in Marshall.
WSC SCOUT — Wayne State has won five of its last six games, and like SSU has fallen only to NSIC-leading Minnesota-Duluth during that streak. The Wildcats have three players scoring double digits, led by 5-9 junior guard Krista Bernadt’s 16.3 ppg. Freshman 6-0 forward Karen Hochstein has also come up big for WSC, averaging 15.5 points to go with a team-high 8.1 rebounds per game. Junior 5-5 guard Sara Miller nets 11.7 ppg and leads the team in assists.
SERIES NOTES — NSU boasted a balanced effort in coming away with a convincing 71-55 win in Wayne Dec. 10 ... Wayne State has never defeated NSU in the Barnett Center.

Dec. 15: Jennifer Murphy vs. Augustana 14 points, 13 rebounds
Dec. 18: Amanda Mikuska at MN St.-Mankato 11 points, 10 rebounds
Jan. 1: Jammie Coyle vs. Moorhead State 26 points, 11 rebounds
Jan. 22: Natalie Braun vs. Winona State 13 points, 10 rebounds
NATIONAL RANKINGS — Northern is represented on the latest NCAA national statistics, released today on the NCAA’s website at www.ncaa.org. The stats were compiled for games through Jan. 23.
Senior guard Jammie Coyle shot up 10 spots and is ranked 33rd nationally in scoring with 18.5 points per game. As a team, NSU ranks 15th nationally scoring (78.9 ppg); 11th in scoring margin (defeating teams by an average of 18 points per game); tied for sixth in winning percentage (90 percent); and ninth in rebounding margin (10.3 rpg more than opponents). NSU’s 13 3-point field goals made at Bemidji State Jan. 8 is still one of the best team game performances among all Division II schools this season.
NCC SUCCESS — The Wolves have fared well this season against the vaunted North Central Conference, which houses the nation’s last seven NCAA II national champions (defending champ North Dakota going for a four-peat this season; North Dakota State pulled off a four-peat before UND’s run). NORTHERN STATE STAYS ATOP NORTH CENTRAL REGION FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT POLL
Jan. 26, 2000
For the fifth straight poll, Northern State's women's basketball team is ranked No. 1 in the North Central Region.
The NCAA II regional poll, which is conducted by the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Committee, came out today. NSU garnered its first-ever first place ranking Dec. 15 and hasn't relinquished the spot.
Check out NSU's website at www.northern.edu every Wednesday afternoon for the updated North Central Region rankings. Records shown below are through Jan. 26.

FREDRICKSON TO GO FOR 500th CAREER WIN vs. SOUTHWEST STATE
Jan. 24, 2000
ABERDEEN, S.D. – No coach in NCAA Division II basketball has won a greater percentage of games through a longer period of time than Northern State University women's coach Curt Fredrickson.
Midway through his 21st season at the helm of Northern's women's program, the Aberdeen, S.D., native will go for his 500th career victory this Friday against Southwest State (Marshall, Minn.). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in NSU's Barnett Center.
Fredrickson's career mark stands at 499-110. That 82 percent winning clip through over two decades is unparalleled in NCAA Division II basketball. In fact, there are only four coaches with a greater winning percentage over a longer period of time at any level of collegiate basketball:
-- Adolph Rupp: Rupp coached men's teams at University of Kansas in 1923 and at University of Kentucky from 1931-52 and 1954-72, ending his career with an 876-190 record (82.2 percent) through 41 years.
-- Clair Bee: Bee coached men's Division I basketball at Rider from 1929-31 and at LIU-Brooklyn from 1932-45 and 1946-51, ending his career with a 412-87 record (82.6 percent) through 21 years.
-- Pat Summitt: Summitt is in her 25th season as University of Tennessee's head women's coach. Entering the season, her career mark stood at 695-146 (82.6 percent).
-- Phillip Kahler: Kahler is in his 26th season as women's basketball coach at NCAA Division III St. John Fisher's (Rochester, N.Y.). Entering this season, his career mark stood at 610-114 (84.3 percent).
If Fredrickson's 16th-ranked Wolves – who entered the week 18-2 overall and ranked first in the North Central Region – win Friday, he will become only the third active NCAA II women's basketball coach with 500 wins. West Texas A&M coach Bob Schneider reached his 500th career victory earlier this season (in his 22nd year as head coach), while Barbara Stevens is well over 500 wins in her 23rd season at Bentley (Waltham, Mass.). Also on track to hit 500 career wins this year and quite possibly this week in Division II women's basketball is North Dakota State's Amy Ruley, who in her 21st season entered this week with a 498-122 record. The Bison host Augustana Friday and South Dakota State Saturday.
Fredrickson, 47, is ranked fifth among current NCAA II women's basketball coaches in winning percentage, but no one above him on that list has coached as long.

WBB TEAM HOSTS CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL; WINONA STATE
Jan. 19, 2000
SCHEDULE — Northern State University’s women’s basketball continues a five-game homestand this weekend, hosting conference newcomer Concordia University-St. Paul Friday, Jan. 21 and Winona State University Saturday, Jan. 22. Both games are slated to tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in the Barnett Center.
RECORDS — Northern State is 16-2 overall and 6-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Concordia-St. Paul is 1-6 overall and 1-12 in the NSIC; Winona State is 10-5 overall and 5-2 in the conference going into Friday’s game at Minnesota-Morris.
NSU REMAINS ATOP NORTH CENTRAL REGION — Northern State was ranked first in
the North Central Region for the fourth consecutive time this week. The NCAA
II regional poll, conducted by the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Committee,
came out today. NSU garnered its first-ever first place NCAA II regional ranking
Dec.
C-SP SCOUT – Concordia-St. Paul lost twice at home last weekend, falling to Bemidji State and UM-Duluth. The Golden Bears have two players scoring in double digits, with Lisa Harfield and Lisa Berwyn both netting just over 10 points per contest. Kristi Shaw leads the boards crew with 5.5 rebounds per game. Concordia’s lone win on the season came Jan. 8 at Minnesota-Crookston, 67-62.
SERIES vs. C-SP — Northern holds a 2-0 all-time series lead on Concordia-St. Paul. Both prior meetings were on neutral sites in Midwest Region playoff games during the 1993-94 (122-59 NSU win) and 1994-95 (125-40 NSU win) seasons. In the last meeting between the teams, NSU set school records for points in a game (125) and biggest winning margin (85 points), while tying another for field goals made (48), which was originally set in the teams’ first meeting a year earlier. NSU would go on to win an NAIA national championship in 1994 and finished among the top eight teams in the nation in 1995.
WSU SCOUT — Winona State had a three-game winning streak snapped by conference leader Minnesota-Duluth last weekend. The Warriors are in a three-way tie for third place in the conference (behind UMD and NSU) and know a win in Aberdeen would go a long way in separating themselves from the pack. WSU has four players averaging in double digits, led by senior forward Jeanelle Soland’s 15.4 ppg. Sophomore guard Nicole Reisner adds 15 points per game to go with a team-high 2.8 steals per contest. Senior 6-1 center Lesley Miller patrols the paint with a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game to go with 14.2 ppg. Junior 6-2 post Amanda Brown is not far behind, with 11.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. WSU’s only losses this season are against some of the best teams in the region (UM-Duluth, Southwest State, South Dakota State, St. Cloud State and Augustana).
SERIES vs. WSU — Northern State and Winona State have met 28 times in a series dating back to 1985. NSU leads the series 26-2. Last season, WSU earned its first win over the Wolves since the 1989-90 campaign with a 73-69 win in Winona. The Wolves came back to defeat the Warriors 82-70 in the season finale in Aberdeen. Winona State has never beaten NSU in Aberdeen (0-14) or in the Barnett Center (0-12), which opened for the 1987-88 season.
LAST WEEK — Minnesota-Morris scored the first two points of the game in its
contest against Northern State last week. The Wolves scored the next 37 to more
than set the tone in what ended up a 91-34 blowout in the Barnett Center.
All 16 of Northern's players saw minutes; 15 scored. Senior guard Jammie Coyle
(Belle Fourche) led all scorers and rebounders with 16 points and nine rebounds
in 18 minutes. True freshman Brandy Warne was next on NSU's scoring list with
a career-high 10 points on five-of-five shooting. Erin Reger led UMM (2-12,
1-6 NSIC) with nine points.
INJURY REPORT — Starting junior post Jennifer Murphy (Aberdeen) suffered a partially separated shoulder during the Bemidji State game Jan. 8 and is listed as questionable for this week.
NATIONAL RANKINGS — Northern is represented on the latest NCAA national statistics,
released today on the NCAA’s website at www.ncaa.org. The stats were compiled
for games through Jan. 16.
Senior guard Jammie Coyle is ranked 43rd nationally in scoring with 18.2 points
per game. As a team, NSU ranks sixth nationally in rebounding margin (11.3 rpg
more than opponents); 10th nationally in winning percentage (89 percent) and
19th in field goal percentage defense (opposing teams shooting just 35.3 percent).
NSU’s 13 3-point field goals made at Bemidji State Jan. 8 is tied for the sixth
most treys made in a game among all Division II schools this season.
NSU’S DOUBLE-DOUBLE CLUB — Northern State has had seven double-double performances
by four players this season. They are:
Nov. 6: Natalie Braun vs. Barry University 13 points, 12 rebounds
Nov. 27: Natalie Braun at Black Hills State 22 points, 10 rebounds
Dec. 6: Jammie Coyle vs. Nebraska-Omaha 18 points, 10 rebounds
Dec. 15: Jammie Coyle vs. Augustana 17 points, 10 rebounds
Dec. 15: Jennifer Murphy vs. Augustana 14 points, 13 rebounds
Dec. 18: Amanda Mikuska at MN St.-Mankato 11 points, 10 rebounds
Jan. 1: Jammie Coyle vs. Moorhead State 26 points, 11 rebounds
NCC SUCCESS — The Wolves have fared well this season against the vaunted North Central Conference, which houses the nation’s last seven NCAA II national champions (defending champ North Dakota going for a four-peat this season; North Dakota State pulled off a four-peat before UND’s run). NSU is 5-0 against the NCC this season, handing four of the five schools their first loss of the season.
CLOSING IN ON 500 — NSU head coach Curt Fredrickson is in his 21st season as head coach at Northern State. His career coaching record (all at NSU) stands at an amazing 497-110 entering this week. During his two decades on the sidelines for Northern State, he has won two national championships and is currently ranked third among all active Division II coaches in victories and fourth in winning percentage. Fredrickson is assisted by Paula Krueger (third year). Scott Klungseth is a graduate assistant coach.
CONFERENCE LEADERS — Northern State has the top-ranked defense in the Northern
Sun Intercollegiate Conference, according to the latest statistical package
released Monday. The Wolves rank first in both scoring defense (allowing only
57.7 points in conference play) and field goal percentage defense (opponents
shooting a paltry 35 percent against NSU). NSU is also tops in the NSIC in rebounding
margin, out-boarding opponents by an average of 14.3 rebounds per game.
Individually, senior guard Jammie Coyle (Belle Fourche) leads the conference
in scoring with 17.3 points per conference game. She also ranks seventh in rebounding
(7.3 rpg). Fellow senior guard Amanda Mikuska (Platte) ranks second in the conference
in 3-point field goal percentage, draining 51 percent of her shots from downtown.
NSIC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK — NSU recipients of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference Player of the Week honor this season:
Nov. 22 Jammie Coyle
Nov. 29 Memory Johannsen
Dec. 20 Natalie Braun
