Northern State Breaks Six Game Losing Streak at SMSU

Marshall, Minn. – Northern State (9-3, 1-1 NSIC) broke a six game losing streak at SW Minnesota State (3-10, 0-2 NSIC) as they broke the Mustangs 78-68 on day two of NSIC action. The Wolves last win in Marshall against the Mustangs was back on Dec. 11, 1999.

Southwest opened the game with a basket on their first possession, but the Wolves went on a 13-0 run over the next four and a half minutes. The Wolves lead by as many as 12 at 18-6 with 11:00 minutes to go in the half before the Mustangs started a run of their own.

The Mustangs went on a 14-2 run to tie the game at 20 with 8:15 to go. The Mustangs hit four three-pointers in the run.

The Wolves countered with a 10-4 run of their own and ended the first half with a 40-35 lead. Jensen led the Wolves with ten first half points.

The second half saw the Mustangs close the gap to one at 43-42, but the Wolves went on a 12-3 run minutes prior to the halfway point of the second half to take a 55-45 lead. The Wolves were able to hold off a semi-rally by the Mustangs in the last couple of minutes as the Mustangs closed the lead to four with a minute left. But again the Wolves answered as Sara Jensen had a nice drive and dish to Celia Westphal for a easy lay-up to seal the Wolves first NSIC victory of the year.

Leading the way for the Wolves were Sara Jensen (Sr., G, South Shore, S.D.) and Noelle Hall (So., C, Altura, Minn.), who both scored 14 points. Hall had a team high eight rebounds as well in the game. Miranda Boepple (Jr., F, Dickinson, N.D.) added 13 points while Celia Westphal (So., F, Worthington, Minn.) had a ten points off the bench for the Wolves.

The Wolves return home next weekend when they host Minnesota, Crookston on Friday night and Bemidji State Saturday night. Both games are slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Barnett Center.
