Dragons Win an Ugly One in Overtime

Moorhead, Minn. – Neither team looked as though they were ranked in the top ten in the regional as MSU Moorhead (13-8, 6-2 NSIC) down Northern State (16-4, 6-2 NSIC) 61-52 in overtime. Both teams shot under 32% from the field and each had 19 turnovers in the game. The Wolves were ranked fifth in the North Central Region while the Dragons came in at #10 in the region this week.

Northern State finished the game 17 of 65 (26.2%) from the field and 3 of 20 (15%) from three point range. MSU Moorhead was 19 of 60 (31.7%) from the field and 3 of 20 from the three point range.

Northern State went 9:17 without a field goal, but the Dragons were only able to go on a 10-0 run during that point of the second half. The Wolves were able to go on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 40 with 5:32 left in the game.

Ali Chmielewski scored a basket with nine seconds left to knot the game at 47 before the Dragons threw away the inbounds pass. The Wolves got two chances but a CarolinBecker (Jr., F, Beulah, N.D.) jumper as time expired bounced off the rim and out to send the game to overtime.

In overtime the Wolves scored only five points and made only one field goal. The Wolves were down two when MSUM’s Allison Swenson (So., C, Holliday, N.D.) banked in a prayer three as the shot clocked wound down to put the Dragons up five and seal the overtime win.

Northern State’s Noelle Hall (So., C, Altura, Minn.) collected her third double double in as many games as she scored 11 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Ali Chmielewski (Sr., F, Foley, Minn.) also had a double double as she scored a game high 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Northern State takes on Upper Iowa on Monday, Jan. 6 th at 6:00 p.m. at Barnett Center in Aberdeen, S.D.
