Becker and Hall Combine 17-of-22 for 40 Points
NSU Breaks NSIC Tournament FG% Record - 57.6%
Aberdeen, S.D – Second seeded Northern State (23-5, 11-3 NSIC) shot the lights out of Wachs Arena in a 92-76 win over seventh seeded Winona State (10-18, 3-11 NSIC) in the first round of the NSIC/Red Baron Women’s Basketball Classic. Northern State broke the NSIC Tournament Field Goal percentage record as they were 57.6% (34-of-59) from the field, just nipping Minnesota-Duluth’s old record of 57.4% (35-of-61). The Wolves now advance to the semi-finals in Wayne, Neb. on Saturday, March 4 th at 2:00 p.m. versus third seeded Concordia St. Paul.
Winona State broke a record of their own as they set the NISC Tournament Free Throw percentage record as they shot 100% (13/13) from the line in the game.
Northern State was led by Noelle Hall (So., C., Altura, Minn.) who scored a game high 24 points on 10-of-14 shooting and snared nine rebounds. Carolin Becker (Jr., F., Beulah, N.D.) scored 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting and had seven assists while SaraJensen (Sr., G., South Shore, S.D.) had 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting with seven assists in the Wolves victory. The seven assists is a career high for Becker and it ties a career high for Jensen.
In the first half Winona State stayed close as they shot 60.0% (6-of-10) from the three-point line. Winona State went on a 9-0 run early in the first half to go ahead of Northern State by seven points 23-16. At the 12:56 mark in the first half Winona State’s second leading scorer Leslie Ross (11.9 ppg) went down with a leg injury and would not return. From there on the Wolves would outscore the Warriors 30-21 to take a two point lead into halftime.
In the first eleven minutes of the second half the Wolves would use two runs of 11-0 to build their lead to 77-54 with 9:21 left in the game. The Wolves would cruise the rest of the game as they get the 16 point win.
The Warriors were led by Amanda Reimer as she scored 19 points going 5-of-9 from the field and 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Molly Anderson was the next closest as she scored 10 points going 2-of-3 from the three point line.
