Wolves Finish Season at NCAA North Central Regionals

NCAA WBB Elite 8The Northern State women’s basketball program finished off one of their best seasons in the past decade as they finished with a 25-7 record after reaching the semifinals of the North Central Regional Tournament. The Wolves also played in their first ever NSIC Tournament Championship game prior to entering the regional.

Northern State knocked off Regis University 89-79 in the first round of the regional before falling to topped ranked North Dakota 90-58 in the semifinals.

Of the Wolves seven losses, two were against North Dakota, a team that lost only one game all season, and two were to Wayne State, the NSIC regular season and tournament champions. The Wolves also lost a tough one on the road to #25 Minnesota-Duluth early in the season.

The Wolves 25 wins were the most since the 1999-00 season when the Wolves went 26-6 and advanced to the NCAA Regional. The Wolves picked up their first regional win knocking off Regis University ( Colo.) of the RMAC, 89-79. The win marked the first in the region since the 1998 season when the Wolves knocked off North Dakota State 76-73.

The Wolves had four players named to the NSIC All-Conference team. Noelle Hall (So., C, Altura, Minn.) was named to first team while Miranda Boepple (Jr., F, Dickinson, N.D.) and Sara Jensen (Sr., G, South Shore, Minn.) were named to the third team. Carolin Becker (Jr., F, Beulah, N.D.) rounded out the all-conference members by being named to the honorable mention team. Hall and Becker made history at NSU by being the first Wolves ever named to the NSIC All-Tournament team.

The Wolves lose three seniors to graduation following this season; Ali Chmielewski (Sr., F, Foley, Minn.), Kristie Chmielewski (Sr., F, Foley, Minn.) and Sara Jensen. All three played key roles helping to the success of this year’s team.

Noelle Hall was one of the pivotal players for the Wolves this season. Hall was named to the Daktronics Inc. North Central All-Region Second Team after finishing second in the NSIC in field goal percentage (55.9%), third in scoring (15.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.3 rpg). Hall had eight double doubles on the season and was named NSIC Player of the Week on February 20 th after scoring 24 points in a pair of games. Hall had ten games of +20 scoring and ten games of +10 rebounds. She reached her career high of 25 points against Concordia St. Paul on January 21 st, the night Coach Fredrickson won his 600 th career game.

The Wolves went 11-3 in the NSIC, with their three losses coming by a combined 13 points and one in overtime. The Wolves knocked off Concordia St. Paul three times this season, a team they were 1-6 against in their last seven meetings. The Wolves also went 15-1 at Barnett Center over the season, losing only to North Dakota. The Wolves, who finished second in attendance in the nation last year again brought in record crowds. The Wolves averaged 2,323 fans per home game last years. This year the Wolves averaged 2,728 over 16 home games totaling 43,654 fans on the season.

The Wolves return three starters for next season, all of whom were all-conference players. The key again for next year will be filling the role of point guard, a role that Sara Jensen played nearly perfectly during her senior season. The Wolves are tentatively scheduled to open the 2006-07 season against Dakota Wesleyan on November 15th.
