Wolves Shine In Primetime
January 20, 2007
ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Wolves pulled out the stops in the first televised basketball game in NSU history, putting forth a strong shooting performance and dominating the rebounding column. 3,805 fans looked on as the Northern women (14-4, 7-2 NSIC) downed the University of Mary (8-10, 4-5 NSIC) 68-57. Junior Noelle Hall was the star of the night with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
The Wolves shot 44.6 percent (29-65) from the field on the night and ripped down 49 rebounds, the second highest team mark of the season. Mary shot 34.6 percent from 18-of-52 shooting and managed just 27 boards. The Wolves scored the first bucket and never looked back, leading by as many as 30 points in the game.
Northern put on a show for the cameras in the opening minutes of the game, quickly going up 8-0 after hitting each of their first four shots. Mary would counter by hitting a set of three pointers and began to pressure the Wolves into several turnovers, but the Wolves kept pushing forward. They led by as many as 14 points in the first half and closed out the period with a 29-20 lead.
Mary's deficit was a result of both poor shooting and rebounding. They hit just 6-of-25 first half field goals for 24.0%. Northern shot 37.1% in the half (13-35) and ripped down 27 boards to Mary's 15. Noelle Hall came up just shy of a first half double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The Wolves allowed just one Marauder field goal in the first five minutes of the second half, sprinting to a 46-23 lead with eight points from Hall in a 17-3 run. Northern continued to pour in the points from all over the court, running the margin up to 30 points by the 6:11 mark (64-34). Against Northern's second and third strings, the Marauders ended the game with a 23-4 run but could not break the double digit mark, falling 68-57.
With her second double-double performance of the season, Noelle Hall (Altura, MN) led NSU with 21 points and 13 rebounds and also dished out four assists. Melissa Braaten (Stillwater, MN) had 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists while Carolin Becker (Beulah, ND) added 10 points and five rebounds. Jaclyn Arns (St. Michael, MN) tied her career high assist mark with six dishes.
Corrie Villegas shot 3-for-3 from three-point range and hit 9-of-10 shots from the charity stripe in leading the Marauders with 24 points. Nicci Landdeck had 11 points while Ashley Fridley led the team in rebounds with seven.
The Wolves will wrap up their home stand with a set of games in Wachs Arena next weekend. They will match up with Winona State at 3:00 pm on Saturday and Upper Iowa on 1:00 pm on Sunday.
