Bears' Second Half Too Big For Wolves

February 9, 2007
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Concordia-St. Paul (14-8, 11-2 NSIC) out-scored Northern State 45-25 in the second half, leading to a 68-49 blowout at Wachs Arena. The Wolves (16-7, 9-5 NSIC) shot just 30.5% in the game and gave up their first home loss of the season.

The Golden Bears knocked down 12 three-pointers in the game, shooting 52.2 percent from beyond the arc. Candace Olstad was a firecracker in CSP's second half offense, nailing a trio of three-pointers and scoring 18 of her 19 points in the final 20 minutes. Northern's offense hit a road block in the second half. The team shot 30 percent from the field, gaining just seven combined points from Boepple, Becker, and Hall. The Wolves out-rebounded the Bears 40-37 and grabbed 13 offensive boards in the game, but with a stalling offense, they could not capitalize on the extra scoring opportunities.

The Golden Bears put their first half points on the board from beyond the arc, knocking down six three-pointers for 18 of their 24 points. They failed to capitalize on free throws, hitting just 3-of-6 from the stripe. The Wolves went about their scoring in the usual fashion, looking for close range shots and hitting the boards to get second chances. NSU out-rebounded CSP 23-18 in the first half, taking a 24-23 lead at the break.

Northern State was led in scoring by Melissa Braaten (Stillwater, MN) with 10 points. Miranda Boepple (Dickinson, ND) led the team on the boards with nine, followed by Carolin Becker (Beulah, ND) with eight.

Candace Olstad and Katie LaViolette led Concordia-St. Paul to a 2006-07 sweep of the Wolves with 19 points each, with both players hitting three three-pointers in the game. LaViolette, the NSIC's leader in assists, dished out six on the night. Mary Schroeder was the team's leading rebounder with seven boards. CSP shot 42.0 percent from the field (21-50).

The Wolves will play their final 2006-07 regular season home game Saturday night, hosting MSU Moorhead at 6:00 pm. It will be the annual "I Hate Winter" night, as well as the alumni reunion day.
