2000-01 Season Recap
In just his first year as a head coach, Patrick Timm helped
rejuvenate NSU's wrestling tradition, and his squad responded
with a record year both on and off the mat.
Three wrestlers represented Northern at the NCAA II National
Tournament, the most since NSU joined the NCAA II ranks for
the 1995-96 season. Equally as important, four wrestlers earned
academic all-American honors, also the most since NSU's ascension
to the NCAA II level.
Earning the right to compete at nationals this season was
senior Dale Daugherty (Huron) at 197 pounds, sophomore Joey
Krause (Aberdeen) at 184 pounds and freshman Baron Blanchard
(Kindred, N.D.) at heavyweight. Earning academic all-American
laurels were Daugherty, Blanchard, sophomore Todd Currey (Miles
City, Mont.) and junior Brent Babcock (North Branch, Minn.).
It was Daugherty's third academic all-American honor and Currey's
second.
Northern finished second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate
Conference regular season dual meet standings. Proving the
parity in an up-and-coming wrestling league, both the Wolves
and Southwest State helped break Minnesota State-Moorhead's
six-year stranglehold on the NSIC team championship. After
faring better than any other NSIC squad at the St. Cloud State
invitational early in the season, the Wolves shocked perennial
national power Minnesota State-Moorhead in Moorhead Feb. 3
by a 25-15 count.
At the NSIC Championships held in Aberdeen Feb. 11, five
NSU wrestlers earned all-conference honors by finishing either
first or second in their respective weight class. Taking home
individual championships on the day were Krause and Blanchard,
while sophomore 125-pounder Chris Feldhaus (Howard) and junior
133-pounder Richard Goethals (Belle Fourche) joined Daugherty
with second-place finishes.
